850 Rwd

Well, I'm just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the cost/difficulty/feasability of changing an 850 to RWD. Now I know it would cost a lot of $$$, but lets discuss what would actually be required. Such as rear suspension, driveshafts/diff/axles, what would you use or from what cars could you use? also mounting the engine fore-aft and the required exhaust etc. I know people have done it in Sweden (seems they've done just about anything)

So... let the discussion/bickering/flaming begin! :P

hardest part id think would be building a complete custom subframe to allow the engine to sit longitudinally, then flip the engine around, bolt a rwd trans to it, and use a custom driveshaft(not that difficult to have made) and one of many rwd rear ends depending on what you wanted. obviously a live axle from say a 940 is going to fit much easier than trying to put a indy rear in, however you could use an entire AWD rear end and beef up the axles a bit and it should be nice too. if you were someone who say owned a machine shop it really wouldnt be very difficult. theres been more involved or equally involved things happen. custom subframes are made for other cars or at least brackets for the existing subframe, for example when you see LS1's in Rx-7s etc etc.

yea an s90 w/ a 5spd would be acool machine

Yep, grab you an M90 from across the pond, have Spec make you up a killer clutch/pp combo, and you may very well have my dream Volvo (If of course you include a VMS rotating assembly in this grand plan).

Why bother...just use the inline 6, beef up internals and add a turbo. Would be easier than getting a 5-cyl into it.

You think? Fair enough though. Does anyone know why Volvo switched from the RWD bricks that had built the company to the FWD cars in '93? Just going with the changes in the industry or was it something else?

EDIT - didn't mean to hijack. it's sorta relevant B)

fwd is easier/cheaper to build, alot of benefits practicality wise.

id rather have the inline 6 when its all said and done, and no you cannotsimply remove the shafts on a fwd based awd system and have rwd. number one the rear shafts are way to weak to handle all the power, and they'd prolly grind the diff down at like half throttle. number two its still a transaxle to the front i beleive, it will require a new transmission to bypass the front.
