Why bother...just use the inline 6, beef up internals and add a turbo. Would be easier than getting a 5-cyl into it.

No, it would be much easier to put the 5-cyl into the 960 than the custom turbo the 960. (Although Peter's custom turboed 960 is faster than just about anyone else here.)

And IMO, swapping the T5 into the 960 would be the best way to get a RWD 850 of sorts.

custom mounts and potentially a new subframe is easier to fabricate than adding a turbo to the motor already in the car? i think not. surely if you want to make insane power either engine is going to needa rebuild. the standard I6 could easily handle moderate boosst, and make more power than the T5 w/o needing new rods etc. ~8psi would be nasty.

Very very difficult. Anyone who says at the VERY minum that you can do it with out cutting the firewall, tunnel and rear suspension is a fool.

Now, you could build a 960/740/940 into something very darn close to a 850 (in terms of comfort) w/ a RWD T5 alot easier.

No offense, but do you know this for a fact? You could easily just drop in a T6 motor, run it on EMS in the 960 and call it a day. I wouldn't want to.. but you could.

Let me put it this way, heres the list of things involved w/ doing a whiteblock---> RWD conversion (and no these aren't hypothesis, these are facts... what do you thikn Im building right now)

1. Transmission (unless you want to stick with the 960 aw30/40 Automatic)

2. EMS (for using the I5)

3. Motor mounts

4. Transmission mounts

Its not that bad, the new project Im working on will solve the main 2 issues (1 and 2).. 3 and 4 aren't that bad.

there were 850 awd so my question where the underbodys different so as to fit a drive shaft. You could use hte differantal from that car, customize it so it only drive to the rear. and attached to a tranny that has been made only to drive the inside (pass. side (right)) wheel. but then it will drive the custom diff first and send power back. this does not address rear suspesion at all. there is room in the rear for a diff if you dont have the stock muffler. but then you would have to fab up a custom suspesion, this could very depending on whether you went w/ a solid rear axle or independent suspension. I dont know what parts could come from awd volvos for this. but as said many are probly to weak. it would be very hard.

Todd the tunnel MAY be big enough for a VERY small DIA (and weak) driveshaft but defiently not for a transmission. Unless your making a custom transaxle--> RWD your going to need to turn the motor N/S and put a fairly good sized transmission behind it. The "AWD" diff in the rear defiently would not stand up to the first time you side step the clutch and hit it w/ 300 wFtLbs of torque. If your not willing to abuse the car some whats the point right?

Oh, I know the EASIEST most feasible way to make a RWD 850, but I swore I wouldn't say. ;)

yeah, I was thinking a keep the engine trasverse. Fit a custom front and rear diff. there is lots of room to fit a the diffs both front and rear.

What is the easyiest way? drop in a red block 4 cyl? Oh yeah, I dont think a 5 will fit inline either, just another problem (i measured it)

A little of topic, but I think a p1800 with a RWD I5 made into a track car would be the ultimate. I've seen a lot of N/S mounted I5's in the 142/240 body cars, and they're very cool. Check out this picture...

It would be bad asss but VERY involved in an 1800. I have friends trying to do the same thing... theres crossmember and steering issues that apparently aren't as present in the 140's.
