FWD is still safer in the winter, gets around almost as well as AWD and won't cost you an arm and a leg to keep in good order. They just stick it in winter mode and go. Weren't you also going to sell the 850 and buy a V90? No wait... you were going to build an '05 NA motor. What would be the plan for the XC? V90 couldn't survive the winters there there is just too much snow.
