S70 T5 Died Last Night. Help?

SWM

Recommended Posts

Sorry i dont post much, but i read around as much as possible.

Had to tow it to my mechanic last night. Driving home in light traffic on highway, just died. was able to pull out of traffic by coasting, tried to turn it over and it will turn over but rpms never go over 1K and it just stalls out. CEL came on a few days ago was scheduled in shop for this weekend. I never panic on the cel as it has been known to go out on the couple occasions in the past it ever came on.

Not looking to fix myself, just looking for ideas on what i might be facing. with 200K on the clock, its a fine line on ditching it if the cost to repair is too high.

Well could be a lot of different, would help to know the CEL code but I'll take a guess: most likely is fuel pump failure but are you saying it idles fine, just not above 1000? That wouldn't be fuel pump, maybe a tear in a big vacuum hose or a dead MAF. These are all little things in the maintenance picture.

Fuel pump job will probably cost a lot from a shop, up near $500. MAF or hose less.

Crank position sensor? Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF)? Fuel pump? (Though I thought they typically die when they won't start up one day, not mid drive) The MAF is especially easy to replace on your own, and the fuel pump shouldn't be too hard either if you're looking to save labor costs.

Hard to take guesses without knowing the fault code stored. For future reference, Autozone and some other parts stores have a code reader you can borrow for free behind the counter as a service to customers. Have a pen and paper ready to write them down.

No need to appologize for reading instead of posting. It's considered a good trait

to clarify, it will not stay idling, it turns over and sounds like it will run, but immediately dies out. odd it happened mid drive. Car has run REALLY strong til now so i cant imagine it is a huge failure, but you never know. and good point, i should get the code read when they occur so i can discern between codes needing immediate car and those not.

Thanks for taking a stab at it...

Also, am i nuts for putting too much more money into a 200K miles Black on Black T5M? before this occurred all i needed was 2 new tires and an new antenna.

it sounds like you are doing pretty good if that is all you have had to invest recently.

I am pretty happy with my 850 turbo. It has 236,000 miles but repairs are starting to add up.

I will have under $1000 (I hope) to get it top pass PA inspection other needed repairs/maintenance.

These are the first major repairs in 3 years of owning the car.

But still.. I could hardly "replace" my car with anything close in features and performance for what I have done to it recently.

And it still turns heads everyday! Especially when it is shiny!

I had a similar problem a while back (car would start but would die immediately at idle). Mine was a bad MAF. You could try unplugging it (only takes a second), giving it some gas when you start it, and seeing if it runs any better. If it is the MAF and you get it running by disconnecting it, don't drive like this for very long. Unmetered air can do bad things to turbo engines.

and the answer is MAF went bad. my mechanic just called. so the T5M is still ticking. wish i knew i would have done it myself but i would never have thought if this while stranded on 128 so oh well. needed a Mobile 1 oil change anyways.

Thanks for the input gang...i knew some of you would have an idea of the issue.

Find a back yard bob who does inspections, not a huge chain store, get your oil changed or something, have him do an inspection, win.

I know in butler, the guy who inspected both of my cars passed 1 with a hole in the exhaust, when 3 other shops told me that was a 100% fail just on hearing it.

Good luck

One last question. Turns out ill also need soon oil cooler hoses and a serp belt. anything special i need to know about these? anyone know the cost of the cooler hoses? couldnt find them on FCP. also mentioned sway bar links? not urgent either, but coming due. any special sway bar links?

I prefer to keep things as close to stock ride as possible.

Check out my for sale stuff for endlinks and such.

cooler hoses ae OEM only I think. You can check out JDLC on here as he rebuilds them but personally, I prefer not to take a chance with stuff that can cost me an engine  . tye wrap the metal keeper clips on the radator end just for good measure though. Buy the square oil thermostat housing gasket when you do this job because you will fight the lines on that end and you dont want to cut the orings and do it again. Finally, eyeball your motor mount by the lines prior to starting the job, you may need to order one and do it at the same time.

And no you're not crazy, my black on black t5m has 180k and i easily have 5-6k in it  however 3k of that have been replacement engines
