Suggestions And Ideas Needed

ive got a birthday coming up and i really want to get myself a full audio systemfor my '02 s60. this may include, but is not limited to: new head unit (lcd or navigation, etc.), new rear deck speakers and rear door speakers, amps (as needed) and of course subs of some kind. also, depending on the cost of the whole operation, i plan on dyna matting the car where necessary. i had a simple 10"x2 subs and amp combo setup not too long ago, but the little sister destroyed both somehow and the fat amp i had also mysteriously vanished... anyway, my main problem with my two 10 inch alpine type-s's was that despite the fact that i had two, my stock bass seemed to override the alpines. the rear seat is extremely thick and i feel that its not letting the bass into the cabin as much as it should be. its like the people outside can hear it better than i can. whatever. my budget will allow for about 2500 max for the headunit, 1200 max for the subs, about 1000max for the amp(s), and 500max for the speakers (probably will want 4 speakers total). ive got the money and time to install an extremely decent system, but i know jack sh*t about audio electronics quality and performance. i could probably buy a newer, strong battery too, if needed. if it helps to know, i prefer rap, dubstep, and grunge, so extremely high bass quality is a must. headunits with navigation are also perferable. are there certain system components that work especially well with volvos? any suggestions as to which headunits, speakers, subs, or amps are best would be fantastic!!

also, does anyone know if the stock '02 s60 (n/a) base model speakers are brand name or just some basic speakers? they bump like hell for being stock base speakers!!:)

Happy birthday! Now, to address the post:

A lot of your pricing isn't balanced. $2500 for s head unit is absurd!laugh.gif Crutchfield is the best place for this IMO, so all prices I'm listing are from there.

So, here are my suggestions:

Head Unit = Alpine INA-W900 --> $1000

Subs = 2x JL Audio 10W7-3 --> $1280 for both

Sub Amp = JL Audio Slash 1000/1v2 --> $1100

Main Amp = JL Audio Slash 300/4v2 --> $560

Front Door speakers = JL Audio C5-525 --> $500

Rear Door Speakers = JL Audio C5-525X --> $500

Ditch the rear deck speakers. They're totally useless with a setup like this.

Get a VERY good wiring kit. BARE minimum of 0/1 Gauge power cable. Get a 4/0 ground cable for the main car ground (the one that runs from the battery to the car frame.) And a good Optima Yellow Top battery is a need for this as well. If you can't FEEL the bass now, you're almost surely dead.laugh.gif

RCA cables are going to be needed. I'd recommend KnuKonceptz. They have a very good selection of stuff, and their prices are reasonable.

oops, I forgot - If you can, build your own sub box. The pre-fab stuff is all crap.

awesome. thanks, i appreciate the advice:)! i kinda figured id either go with alpine or jl audio subs for sure. are the jl audio slash amps really the best to go with? and when it comes to building an enclosure, i'm not sure anything i could build myself would be any better than what i could buy at a store. i actually still have one 10" ported enclosure <--- would two individual 10" boxes be any better or worse than one 10"x2 enclosure? also, ported and/or vented enclosures: whats the difference between the two variations/ which is more appropriate for what you suggested in regards to the subwoofers and their performance and durability? one more thing: is there any way to tell if the certain in-car speakers (5 1/4", i think) have different qualities of bass? is there a certain number to look for or a certain feature to keep an eye out for that would imply that it has better bass quality (how can i or is there a way to tell if the speakers will have better bass than others?)

I like the JL Slash amps because they throw down the same RMS wattage at any resistance from 1.5 ohms to 4 ohms. If you don't think you can build the box, it's not that huge of a deal. I didn't bother with doing a box for my Rockford Fossgate sub, but I don't really consider it a high-end setup (err, It's barely in the half decent category for me.) 2x single boxes vs. 1x double box makes no difference. Wiring is more of a hassle with two singles, but you have better placement options that a double. I don't think ported/sealed will do much anyways, so go with a sealed box. The key thing is the volume of the box. For the subs I recommended, each box or section needs to be ~1.83 cubic feet for a sealed box. (I didn't do the calcs for a ported/vented, which btw, there is no difference. Just two terms that mean the same thing.) For the door speakers, look at their response frequency range. The lower the first number is, the better bass it will do.
