1999 S70 Front End Suspension Noises

Hi Guys,

I was in an underground parking garage and heard a VERY disturbing noise! Pulling into my parking spot - with the wheel at full lock i head a very loud and pronounced clicking noise. I am guessing that the CV boot may be torn up and the Axle may be FUBAR. I could not go under the car as was in tux for wedding - but will be doing so later today to check the CV boot for tears and such. Is there another possible explanation? There are no noises otherwise gonig over speedbumps ormanhole covers - it is only replicable by going to full lock turning RIGHT - no noises when at full lock turning Left.

btw i am driving a 1999 S70 NA 5pd with 250'000 KM

Now if my guess is correct - and the cv boot is torn - and the Axle IS FUBAR - is this a BIG job? any guess on $$?

thanks for any help/insight you all can provide - i will be going under the car this evening once the stupid rain stops - so any other things to look for would be helpful!

Hello, I must do the same job to my car(2002 NA auto, 109K miles). The posts on Brickboard and Matthew's describe it as quite simple. Removing the brake caliper bolts will be the hardest part. Check first to see if you have common hex head bolts or E-Torx. Give them a shot of PB Blaster while you're there. My additions to the tool roll include little scraps of plywood and short screwdrivers for leverage needed for the final prying out from the transmission case. My axle was ~80 total USD from FCPGroton though shipping to Canada might bring added costs. A local store wanted only $75 w/core. Alas, there have been reports of misapplications of axles distributed by the big, familiar auto parts stores. That might be straightened out by now. I chose Groton because they're a site sponsor and their service is GREAT. One more thing. You said "...if the boot is torn and if the axle IS FUBAR..."; I was going to change the boot and regrease if my CV joint wasn't FUBAR but was convinced to change axle assembly when I added up the prices of a boot kit + the time required to do it + any unknowns (rust on my CV bearings, dirt contamination and unfamiliarity with the band crimping tool-which I don't own one of) versus changing it quickly. Kira
