00 V70R Excessive Cranking Before Starting

I think we might need clarification here.

Is this an intermitent problem where occasionally it cranks for a long time (ie 5 seconds) before finally starting, and other times works just fine?

Or is this a slow start all the time, and it's not that much longer, maybe 1 second longer than most cars?

Because if it's only sometimes longer, and much much longer than usual, I think I can safely say my comment about the grounds isn't very valuable.

What t5gruppy said. If you leave key on for a bit it starts right up. If not it cranks a while like 10 sec.

Hello all,

As suggested, connect a fuel pressures gauge and verify how quickly the pressure drops off after engine shut down. Likely a fuel pump check valve, which is somewhat common on the '00 AWD cars. Replaced my '00 S70 AWD's pump last fall for the same issue. Mine would drop from 56 psi to less than 10 psi in 10 minutes!! :(

Check valve is built into the pump assembly and the rear axle needs to be lowered to allow for pump replacement. Some (the above mentioned JRL comes to mind) have suggested installing an aftermarket check valve in the line near the tank. You could try that route I suppose, but the valve was half the price of a new pump and sort of a gamble. I intend to keep my S70 for a while yet, so I chose to just bit the bullet and fix it correctly. Anyway, check your residual pressure and report back.

Hope this helps,

Joe

P.S. - Pressure should not fall more than 20 psi after 20 minutes (per Volvo)...

Resurrecting a thread please.

I have a '94 850T and have hard starting/no starting issues. I can't get a fuel pressure gauge on the shrader valve on the rail (clearance issue) so I put it on the shrader by the fuel filter (new).

My pressure at position 1 is 44psi. Key off, pressure falls from steady 44 psi to about 6 psi in about 5 minutes!

Does this point to the fuel pump/check valve? I gather they are integral to each other so am I looking at a new fuel pump here?

Needs some help!

Thanks

is it intermittently excessive cranking or does it happen all the time? JRL's advice was that the check valve inside the fuel tank that maintains fuel pressure was bad and that he knew of a check valve that could be installed outside of the tank.

my '00XC had sporadic long cranks which was cured by a new camshaft position sensor. before the new sensor, it'd take over 10 seconds to start the car every now and then. it hasn't happened since the new camshaft sensor but my car was also throwing a code related to the sensor at the time. YMMV

does the sensor when it fails just cause this or, does it stop the entire thing from starting?

Its a fuel pump issue...so common...the fuel pump loses residual pressure causing you the excessive crank.needs new pump or just let the pump prime with key in position 2 before you start the car
