It Lives!

Hi all --

So about a year has come and gone since I first posted about this car. Some of you may recall...it is a 2000 Nautic Blue V70R and it's unique because that color was never officially offered in the states. I emailed Volvo...they exported 6, all of which were for executives and driven as demos. The car is fully loaded and has the two-tone suede. While that's nice, the car had problems...LOTS. First it got popped in the snoot but that only began to tell the tale. Why it got popped in the snoot we believe was simple...it needed so much work that the person who had it before couldn't afford to fix it so they ran it into something instead...how nice. Anyhow, at 99k miles an otherwise very nice and extremely rare Volvo was put out of it's misery. Until....

We saved it from its fate as a parts car and then scrap. Before the cosmetic repairs could begin, my brother tackled the engine. Cylinder 3 had no compression at all...the other four all scored in the 20's and 30's...so bad news bears on that. The head was removed and decked and the head gasket replaced. While there, the turbo needed to come off and be rebuilt...it was all but seized. Various and sundry other items were attended to while under the hood, but those were the big ones...and that's enough. Of course the water pump and timing belt, etc. were all also replaced.

Now that the engine had been attended to, we needed to focus on the outside. A hood was sourced (in color...hooray for that). A new R bumper was ordered, e code lenses, clear corners, new fog lights, etc. I also covered the fog lights in yellow film. There was also damage to the cross member in the front of the car and so that was addressed. Lastly, I came upon an IPD mesh grill...the good kind. I don't care for it on this car I don't think...I would prefer a XC grill with a blue Iron Man logo.

Inside the car just needed a hell of a cleaning which it got. The interior is really extremely nice. The door panels are all loose though...if anyone has suggestions I am all ears. I also sweater stoned the suede...it came out like new.

So that is the story of one doomed NauticalbluR as I've come to call it. I drove it tonight for the first time and maybe I'm nuts but we truly connected. As soon as I took off down the road it seemed to say, "thank you".

I would like to say thank you to my brother. Without you, David, this project would not have happened. I hope you can use your talents one day in a way that makes you happy. I am so proud of you and the work you did. Also, thank you to my father for helping with the financing and for your support.

Now, some pictures...and no it's not quite done. It needs HID's, tinted, I have IPD lowering springs and new struts, and some form of wheel and tire.

Where it began...

VERY nice! I love that you saved this.

I agree...an XC70 grille is the only way to go on this car. Jeweled C70 head lights would be a very nice add as well. Tint and maybe springs would finish it off...maybe a set of comets? Being so rare I'd leave it close to stock myself.

Can you describe more of how you cleaned up the suede? Did this remove the balling up?

The issue you are describing on your door panels is very common, especially here in the south where it gets so hot. The glue volvo used to glue the inner/outer part of the door panels together and glue the clip mounts to the door panels sucked and it comes loose over time. Volvo has a repair kit with a new upgraded hot glue that works quite well. You could also try regular hot glue as well. I would reglue all the pieces that are detached and add new glue on the ones that are not as well. I would also order all new door panel clips since you will break some when removing the door panels. If you need any more help with this please let me know.

Awesome job!

Nick

Great work Mike!

OMG, is that an old school IPD mesh grill?

I have a near mint XC grill with the old style slash in great shape I would surely be willing to discuss trading. I've wanted an old school grill for quite some time. :)

The new aftermarket mesh grills just do not fit right IMO.
