89 740 No Spark

I'm trying to help a friend with his Volvo. Without much experience with the rwd Volvos, I'm turning to you guys. Here's what's been given to me so far.

No start-

Fuel is present

No spark

Spark is being checked at coil (not present)

There is power to the coil on one terminal and oscilating on the other (could coil be connected wrong?)

Crank position sensor was replaced with known good unit

I have not seen this car yet, so all of these are assumptions. At this point, assuming so, what would be the next logical step in diagnosing this problem? Anything that's typical here?

My 89 740 doesnt have a crank sensor.. but a hall effect sensor in the distributor..The hall effect sensor also grounds the fuel pump..

if im not mistaken the 2 89s ive use to work with did not have hall sensors in the distributor, no spark could be caused by a bad coil or a bad ignition booster..

I went and looked at the car today.

This 740 does use a CKP. The on-board diagnostic checked the proper operation of the CKP according to this site:

http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm#FuelInjectionandIgnitionDiagnosticCodesi

So far everything has been ruled out, besides the ignition booster/power stage booster (whatever). Like whenever I go to help someone out and leave with my tools, I manage to forget something. This time, it was my test light that I left sitting on the top of my tool box. I'm going to run over tomorrow and check the power stage using this method:

When the car dies run a test light from the negative side of the coil to ground. If the light flashes brightly when you bump the starter then all the ignition components are ok, and the fuel pump should run for a few seconds. If the light barely flashes and the fuel pump doesn't run, then suspect the ignition amplifier (between the air filter housing and the inner fender wall.)

Fixed the car Monday. Turned out to be the Ignition powerstage amplifier. Checked coil, and coil was receiving constant power (with test light, no DMM at that time to measure) with no spark, and no pulsing. Replaced power stage and started right up.
