98 V70R Speaker Upgrade

Ok...I doing the evap this weekend and thought it would be a good time to replace the dash speakers since it'll be out.

From my searching I've determined the following sizes for the 98 V70R (can anyone confirm I am right)

dash (2) = 3 1/2"

Center (1) = ???

doors (4) = 5 1/4"

rear pillar (2) = 3 1/2"

What size can go in the center???

I want to replace all the speakers with something decent. I want to keep the cost down.

I have the stock head unit and will probably be keeping it in there.

IIRC the front doors are 6.5 in. The rears are also 6.5in.

No to thread jack, but I didnt want to start another audio thread. When replacing the front door speakers, do you reuse the bracket that is on the speaker? If so, how do you get it off?

So wait, you're pulling out the Dynaudio speakers, is that what you're saying? If so, good luck on finding a replacement speaker for the center without doing some modifications to the dash, the speaker cover mates directly with the speaker - though when Jeremy (Exexpat) did his he dropped a Nokia 5" in so try that route.

Your dynaudios if in good condition are worth some coin to other enthusiasts so don't just toss them.

Just to keep things clear, the Dynaudio package was an option, not a stock feature on the R's.

But if the OP's got'em and wants to "Upgrade", hell, shoot me a price for those ratty old Dynaudio's!

Hate to see'em taking up space in your garage. I'll pay freight and add enough for a 24 of tasty brew.

Whatta ya say? ;)

Even the original, "non-Dynaudios" are a pretty nice set of speakers.

IIRC, Harman makes'em. The system just wasn't set up for serious bump.

Unless the stockers are actually blown, I'd just add a sub and call it good.

But my offer stands! :)

dash (2) = 3 1/2" Maybe possible, certainly not easy. Stick with a 1" tweeter in the dash. I'd recommend a 6.5" or 6.75" component speaker for the front.

Center (1) = ??? No idea. From what I've heard/read, the stock speaker is strange, the magnet is mounted on top of the cone, underneath the grille.

doors (4) = 5 1/4" 6.5" stock, you can fit a 6.75" speaker if you choose. Pick a set of components for best sound, co-axials for lower cost.

rear pillar (2) = 3 1/2" Same as dash.

What size can go in the center???

Read this thread, even though the title says "for 99-00", all the speaker sizes are the same, and the discussion between Washdup and myself is in regards to his 98 T5M

And to the poster who asked, yes, you re-use the stock bracket. Removing the speaker assembly from the door is easy, then onto the speaker itself. Drill out the 4 plastic rivets (the cross-hatched spots) on the speaker, then use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the speaker away from the bracket. Don't worry about being gentle, they're glued on pretty well, so it takes a bit of force to remove them. PM me if you need more detailed help.
