VOLVO 850 SERIES

Rockleigh, NJ -- For 1997, Volvo's front-wheel-drive 850 series is available in four different versions: the 850, the 850 GLT, the 850 T-5 and the 850 R. As is the company's practice, each comes as both a sedan and wagon.

While all versions of the 850 share essentially the same suspension, basic drivetrain and critical dimensions, they differ in their levels of performance and luxury. They do not differ at all, however, in their levels of safety and occupant protection.

All 1997 Volvo 850 models are equipped with dual front and dual side-impact air bags, the company's energy-absorbing structure--including their patented SIPS--as well as three-point safety belts and head restraints at all five seating positions.

Safety

In addition to dual front air bags and a side impact air bag for each front seat, all Volvo 850s feature front seat belts with automatic, pyrotechnically actuated pretensioners to ensure that the belts are cinched down in the event of a frontal impact.

Besides being restrained by three-point safety belts, all occupants in every 850 are protected by Volvo's Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) which channels impact energy around the vehicle's structure, away from the car's occupants.

All wagon models, except the 850 R, also come equipped with an intergrated child booster cushion in the center rear armrest.

All Volvo 850 models have daytime running lights. The headlamps themselves are semi-sealed beams with a replaceable halogen bulb and the lenses and all can be equipped with a washer/wiper system, which is standard on the 850 R. In addition, there's a single fog lamp on the rear of every 850 model.

Drivetrain

All 850 models are powered by a transversely mounted, in-line, five-cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, and the block and cylinder head are both made of die-cast aluminum. However, engine specifics within each series vary. All engines in the 850 models meet OBD-II requirements.

Naturally-aspirated 850 models are available with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The 850 GLT, 850 T-5, and 850 R versions are available only with an automatic transmission.

850

Depending on whether it's equipped with a manual or automatic transmission and whether it's being sold in California, Massachusetts, New York, or one of the other forty-seven states, the 850 may have one of two engines.

All cars with a manual transmission (and cars equipped with an automatic that are being sold in one of the three strict- emissions states) are equipped with a Transitional Low Emissions Vehicle (TLEV) engine. Cars with automatic transmissions destined for the rest of the country do not receive a TLEV rating.

The TLEV engine is 2.4-liter five-cylinder with a Bosch Motronic 4.4 engine management system. Non-TLEV 850s have the same displacement and mechanical components and a Bosch Motronic 4.3 engine management system. In both cases, engine output is 168 horsepower at 6100 rpm and 162 lb.-ft. of torque at 4700 rpm.

For 1997, 850 sedans and wagons with either manual or automatic transmissions have an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 20 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg on the highway.

850 GLT

This year the 850 GLT has a new engine, a version of model year 1996’s naturally-aspirated, TLEV 2.4-liter, five- cylinder engine. The 850 GLT, therefore, continues to be designated a Transitional Low Emissions Vehicle. The engine is characterized by Volvo as a HTLR (High Torque Low Rev) design. Like the naturally-aspirated version, the HTLR engine has a Bosch Motronic 4.4 engine management system. The motor develops 190 horsepower at 5100 rpm and 197 lb.ft. of torque at 1800 rpm versus the 1996 version which had 168 hp at 6200 rpm and 162 1b.ft. at 4700 rpm.

Available only with automatic transmission, both the 850 GLT sedan and wagon have an EPA fuel economy rating of 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

850 T-5

The 850 T-5 sedan and wagon have a 2.3-liter five-cylinder engine equipped with a turbocharger and intercooler as well as a Bosch Motronic 4.3 engine management system. The engine develops 222 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 221 lb.ft. of torque at 2100 rpm.

Equipped with Volvo's four-speed automatic transmission only, both sedan and wagon versions of the 850 T-5 are rated at 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

The mechanical elements of the turbocharged engine in the 850 R are the same as those in the 850 T-5. The electronic elements of the 850 R, however, are different. The 850 R has a Bosch Motronic 4.4 engine management system that's been specifically programmed to allow the turbocharger to produce maximum boost for a slightly longer duration, and only over brief periods. The result is a jump in maximum horsepower to 240 hp at 5600 rpm. Maximum torque is the same at 221 lb.ft. at 2100 rpm.

The 850 R's engine management system allows for momentary bursts of turbo boost pressure to increase from 9.6 pounds per square inch (psi) to 10.9 psi during full-throttle acceleration for approximately seven seconds. The 850 R comes equipped with an automatic transmission only and both sedan and wagon versions have been rated by the EPA to deliver 19 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway.

Chassis

Regardless of body type or model designation, all 1997 Volvo 850 series models have the same essential underbody structure and fully independent suspension.

The transversely mounted engine and transmission are in an alloy subframe to further isolate drivetrain noise and vibration from the passenger compartment. The front subframe also carries the front suspension.

The 850 series uses a MacPherson strut front suspension with a stabilizer bar. The coil springs are asymmetrically mounted over the struts and shock absorbers. The stabilizer bar on all models, except the 850 R, has a 20-mm diameter. The 850 R features Volvo's Sport Suspension which includes a 21-mm diameter front stabilizer bar.

All 850s utilize Volvo's patented Delta-link rear suspension system. This features separate coil springs and shock absorbers on lower control arms made of aluminum alloy. These control arms are attached to the car's underbody via separate, short links called "Delta" links. When used on sedans or with the Volvo Sport Suspension, this rear suspension system also includes an stabilizer bar. The 850, 850 GLT and T-5 sedans have a 19.5-mm diameter stabilizer bar. The 850 R sedan has a 20-mm diameter stabilizer bar while the 850 R wagon, a 20.8-mm. The Sport Suspension is available as on option on the other 850 models.

All 850 series cars are equipped with four-wheel disc brakes with a Bosch anti-lock system (ABS) as standard equipment. All 850-series models have vented 11.0 inch front discs and solid 11.5 inch rear discs. The parking brake is a mechanically operated drum brake system.

In addition, all models have power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering with a 16.8:1 ratio and 3.2 turns of the steering wheel between locks. Naturally-aspirated sedans and wagons have a 33.5-foot diameter turning circle. Turbocharged models have 34.5 foot turning circle.

The 850 and 850 GLT are equipped with either 195/60VR15 Goodyear Eagle GA or Michelin MXV4 all-season tires on 6.5x15-inch wheels. The 850 has steel wheels; the 850 GLT has six-spoke alloy wheels which are optional for the 850.

The 850 T-5 rides on 205/50ZR16 Michelin tires and 6.5x16-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. The 850 R has 205/45ZR17 Pirelli P-Zero tires fitted to 7x17-inch five-spoke "titanium" gray color alloy wheels, as standard. Both models may be equipped with optional 205/55ZR16 Michelin tires.

Wagons can be equipped with an optional load rail system that accommodates up to 220 pounds when properly loaded. All sedans and wagons have a towing capacity of 3,300 pounds.

Comfort and Convenience Features

All 850 series models have standard equipment which includes cruise control; heated, power outside mirrors; power windows and door locks; an adjustable tilt steering column; and a two-step remote keyless entry system. (The first step unlocks the driver's door, the second unlocks all the doors, trunk or rear hatch and the fuel-filler door.) Armrests with cupholders are fitted to all models.

All 850 models come equipped with CFC-free air conditioning, with separate temperature controls for the driver and front passenger. All models other than the 850 have an automatic climate control system.

The rear seatbacks are split 60/40 to accommodate objects of various sizes and shapes. For additional cargo carrying capacity, the front passenger seat backrest folds completely forward, providing nearly nine feet of loading capacity for long items.

The 850 comes equipped with an eight-way manually adjustable driver seat; all other models in the 850 series have an eight-way electrically adjustable driver's seat with three memory settings. All models except the 850 R have standard plush or velour upholstery and leather available as an option. The 850 R offers a unique upholstery of leather and Alacantra¨ synthetic suede.

All models except the 850 have as standard equipment a power sliding/tilting glass sunroof.

Also standard on the 850 T-5 and 850 R is an electrically adjustable front passenger seat with three memory settings. In addition, the 850 R has heated front seats as standard equipment; they are optional on other 850 models. The 850 R's dash and console are trimmed in either black burl walnut or light Scandinavian birch. The 850 R also boasts a leather- wrapped steering wheel with a tilt/telescope adjusting steering column.

The 850 and 850 GLT are equipped with a six-speaker audio system. It has an electronically tuned AM/FM/cassette with anti-theft circuitry and CD compatibility. The unit in the 850 has an 80 watt amplifier; the unit in the 850 GLT provides 100 watts. A remote-mounted CD changer is available as a dealer accessory. Both the 850 T-5 and 850 R come with an in-dash CD AM/FM/cassette unit that delivers 200 watts to eight speakers and is protected by anti-theft circuitry.

Dimensions

All 850 series models sit on a 104.9-inch wheelbase. They all have a front track of 59.8 inches and a rear track of 57.9 inches. Sedans are 183.5 inches long and wagons are 185.4 inches long. All 850 models are 69.3 inches wide. Sedans are 55.7 inches tall and the wagons are 56.9 inches tall.

The sedans offer 14.7 cubic feet of trunk space, while the wagons have 37.1 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the rear seatbacks up. When the rear seats are folded, 67.0 cubic feet of storage space is available.

The 850 sedan has a curb weight of 3,232 pounds, while the wagon weighs 3,342 pounds. The 850 GLT weighs 3,250 pounds in sedan form and 3,360 pounds as a wagon. The 850 T-5 sedan weighs 3,287 pounds and its wagon version weighs 3,387 pounds. The special edition 850 R sedan weighs 3,278 pounds and the wagon version comes in at 3,387 pounds.

Wow,where did that come from?So there is still some confusion as to what version motronic my car and R model has,wonder why there is no concrete answer to this question?Bottom line I guess is for me to get a '97 R ecu and its either going to work or i'm stuck with GLT tune of my origional ECU

Sorry for being a dumbass,but I cant figure out how to read the vin breakdown.Heres what I've got.My current car vin=YV1LWS643V2332829,putting HPT motor in,found '97R ecu from vin#YV1LWS726V2278312,can you help me figure this out?Thanks

I don't think I can help you with that. In both VIN numbers the W (for wagon) is followed by S but it should be a 5 or a 9. You either have different VIN system in Canada or you mistook the number 5 for letter S. So, lets just assume that's the case.

YV1 = manufacturer's code

L = 850 series

W = 5 door wagon

56 = B5254T Emissions (850AWD Canada)

4 = w/o EGR w/air pump, w/OBDII, w/elec. control evap,

Motronic 4.4 w/Rulo., TLEV (55, 56)

V = 1997

2 = Ghent, Belgium (that's where the car was made)

You can use this to figure out the same info for the 2nd VIN.

That second ecu is a 4.3. The reason why I posted the second set of data after the article is to show discrepancy. The document from Volvo states that the 97R is 4.4 when the vin decoding says 4.3.

Also, the article states that the increased boost of the R lasts for 7 seconds. However, the owner's manual states 30 seconds.

Thanks for the info,I'm the o/p,I live in Washington state.The first vin is from my car,'97GLT.The 2nd vin is supposedly from a '97R.Is the LPT ecu for '97 the only '97 with 4.4?Is there a '97HPT ecu thats 4.4?

The other 4.4 is a 97 2.4L with no turbo. The 97 GLT is based on the 2.4 NA but with a lower compression of 9:1 and the addition of a turbocharger and supporting components. Your best bet is to find a 97R 5-speed ecu since your car is a 5-speed and you are swapping the engine of a 98 2.3 HPT with a 16T (IIRC). There is a guy on here (yellow95) that used to own a 97GLT and he was running a 97R or T5 ecu with no problems for a substantial period of time. I doubt that his AC was out because he lived in FL .
