Rear Brake Noise

Recommended Posts

My rear brakes are making noise after I just replaced them with autozone brake pads.

heres the story & history prior replacing them.....On my way on a roadtrip to Kent Island , MD my rear brakes started making grinding noises about 20 miles into my trip . I figures I need new brakes , so I pulled into a rest stop to keep an eye on it. its grinding the rotor with fine lines by now. So of course I didnt replace them until I got back home. to figures about 250 miles round trip with this problem.

you guys think my rotor being grinded would be making this train horn noise / loud humming. could i keep driving it and it will eventually go away or shall I get a grinder and smooth the rotor down? its rough 3/4 of the surface , these are also pretty new rotors as well.

First off a huming sound when driving is usually a hub and bearing. Does the noise get louder when accelerating and then die down when decelerating? If so you can pretty much guarantee that it's a hub assembly that's gone. Now as far as the rotors are concerned, the best bet is to replace them. If they're brand new (sound like they are from your post as well as the pads) You can also machine them. Sometimes it's cheaper to just put a new set on then trying to machine them. Also do you have the shims on the back of the pads? This i find also helps with brake noise. PM me if you have anymore questions.

no the humming doesnt get louder and softer within speed. it starts at around 30mph + if i hit the brakes it goes away and comes back after awhile.

the humming sound was never present until the pads were replaced. I did think the shims were installed wrong , but after jacking up the car 2x's ( everyting looks good) and test driving. the noise is still there.

whats the chance of the rotor making the noise rather than the hub assembly going bad when it hasnt hummed the whole entire road trip until now?

Well in the post before you said that the rotor was really shitty looking right? Lines on it? Feel the rotor and tell me is it not smooth? Kinda rough? Like pitted at all? Also when ur driving (on the highway) and you put your foot on the brake do you feel any kind of a pulsation? I need to know a little bit more about the work that you did on the vehicle. Did you just change the pads or did you do the rotors as well?

Yes it could possibly be the pads but he said in his first post that the rotors were pitted (lines on them) That could cause a problem with the braking as well. That's why i asked if he replaced the rotors when he changed the pads cause i know mine almost made the same type of noise. Machnined the rotors and cleaned all the caliper sliders and pins and i have never had an issue since.

ok sorry but ill clear things up a bit...

the rear brake rotors have been replaced last year , looking new still. But since my rear pads went bad in the beginning of my road trip. they started cutting into my rotor for the whole 250+ miles. I replaced the pads first thing when I got back home.

no noises before the brakes went bad , when the pads were gone they were grinding the whole trip - no humming. I replaced the pads & shims. now i get this humming noise. doesnt get louder as I increase speed or quieter when i decrease speed.

the humming starts about 30mph + , if i tap the brakes they stop humming for short time.

I would try to replace the rotors and see if the sounds goes away. Also when you have the brakes apart, take a good look at the pads and make sure they don't look shitty; as in any grooves in them. I've seen this happen before. Clean and lubricated the bracket and caliper slider/pins. Let me know your if this solves your problem.

I posted in the other thread.

You need shims, if the rotor is messed up it will eat pads faster but should not make noise. One of my front pads blew apart before and by the time I could get new pads the rotor was mangled. I couldn't afford to replace everything so I just threw new pads on until I could get new rotors, the pads were dead in under 2500mi. but they never made a sound.

I had the exact same issue.

Rotor is not the issue.

Buy the Volvo OEM pads, get rid of the stupid shims (I hate shims).

Put a bit of anti-squeal compoaung behind the pad and all is good for me.

Were the rear pads new or old? The the rear brakes heat up in those 250 miles? If the pads were new and/or the brakes heated up, it's time to rebuild(or replace) the rear caliper.

In any case, I would redo the brakes, making sure everything is put back together correctly.

Don't hand-grind the rotors! They have to be perfectly smooth and level. Take 'em to a shop for grinding.

Did you install a new pin & spring kit?

You might want to adjust the e-brake pads to see if they're rubbing at all.

thanks , will not do that.

no new pin & spring kit either.

the caliper cant be frozen , i pull the ebrake and lines from both sides on the road appear in my rear mirror

but there seems to be less noise now that i been driving it , and at times i would pull the ebrake to stops to break them in. it seems to be helping.

yes , I have always bought OEM pads , but wtf ... i wanted cheap REAR pads this time u know what i mean.
