FAST850R
Hi, I've had this code P0715, which is vehicle speedometer sensor. I believe Volvo has 2 different type of sensors on the transmission. I replaced the one top of the transmission, right below the intake pipe. It didn't fix the problem. Now I have to tackle the other sensor, I believe it's below the battery tray. Does anyone know what to call this sensor, and where to order the part, and how to replace it? The one that I replaced was easy. Just replacing the onld one to new one....but the other one looks more complicated. If anyone can help me to replace the sensor, that would be great. My car is 1996 850r with 141k miles. Thank you. mike-dbf
Nobody? I know somebody here knows what I am talking about..... it's called a transmission speed sensor,it's located under the air filter assemble and is held down by 1 screw a torx#27.i've seen them priced for $42 @ partsgeek or if there is a pick-a-part or ecology it should be less than $10-if you get it at ecology or p-a-p you can atleast rehearse working on it without worrying about breaking any parts. as far as the wiring,i just cut them and spliced it on the car. Thank you for the reply. If you look at this pdf file, it called RPM sensor(#5 in the picture). I ordered the part, and I tried to replace it by removing air filter box, and battery tray. However, the part looked different from the picture so I couldn't replaced it... Here is the picture of the sensor that I am talking about.... This doesn't look like automatic speed sensor or vehicle speed sensor...

I might be a newb here but i also have a 96 850 turbo, and my speedo is controlled by the abs sensor. does your abs light come on also? I might be way off but just checking. I just now replaced the ABS module, but I still get the transmission up arrow light and CEL. Yeah, I thought VSS is controlled by abs on our cars so I hoped that replacing the module would fix it, but no. I also took it to a shop, and a mechanic told me it's one of the sensors on the tranny. I replaced one, but it didn't fix, so I am about to replace the other one..... Like I said, if you look at the picture that I attached, the part looks different from the rpm sensor you can find on online....I am confused. You can clearly see that the gray wire is a lot longer than rpm sensors. I kind of remember it was different look when I tried to replace it....I should have taken pictures... The rpm sensor that I got from online has very short gray wire with a plug. The sensor that attached on the tranny not only looked different, but also the wire was very long. Hum....so even my car is 96, maybe the transmission was built in 95??? Is there anyway to check whether mine is 95 or 96? I will check the partgeek.com to see whether it's the same part or not. My car runs fine so it's not an emergency situation I just don't want to see the CEL and up arrow flashing all the time while I am driving. I have to tackle other problems for now, so if you can check it while you are replacing pcv system, that would be great. If I remove the battery tray and air filter tray again, I will take pictures and post here...but I am sure it looked exactly same as the picture above.. Ozark Lee
The vehicle speed sensor on my '94 is on the passenger's side of the transaxle, just above the axle vertically. I haven't looked for it on my '96s or the S70 so I don't know if it was changed along with the speedometer setup after '95. You need to get under the car to get to it. ...Lee

I need to remove a battery tray and air filter box to access and remove it. It just look different from 96 rpm sensor that I ordered.
FAST850R
Ok, I found this page Somebody is selling transmission harness on ebay. If you look carefully, there is the rpm sensor, but the end of wire connected to the socekt.... It totally looks different from this, which I have ordered before. JordanW
Right, they are different. One is for output speed (the one with the connector) The input speed sensor is part of the transmission connector. You can pull the connector apart and seperate the part you need. Have you checked the sensors out with a DVOM?

Have you checked the sensors out with a DVOM? Sorry, that made no sense. Output speed sensor/VSS is by itself (the one on your partsgeek.com link). Input speed sensor/trans RPM sensor is the one from your ebay link. You can take apart the transmission connector to get just the input/rpm sensor. The pdf link up above has the ohm/resistence specs for you to check them out.
