How To Replace Speedometer Sensor On Automatic Tranny?

Sorry, that made no sense. Output speed sensor/VSS is by itself (the one on your partsgeek.com link). Input speed sensor/trans RPM sensor is the one from your ebay link. You can take apart the transmission connector to get just the input/rpm sensor.

The pdf link up above has the ohm/resistence specs for you to check them out.

Hum...so I need to pull the transmission connector to replace the rpm sensor, correct?

This is so confusing. Try to find either "volvo 850 speedometer sensor", or "volvo 850 rpm sensor" You will get the same parts, at least the picture looks the same.

Now I can see that rpm sensor should look different from vss, all the online part shop messed up with those parts info and picture.

I don't think I can buy rpm sensor, because it's the part of transmission connector....

How can I fix this then? I know I have to test the input/rpm sensor, but what if it's bad? Do I have to buy the whole wire harness???

I'd check them both out, shouldn't take that much time or be that hard. I believe the Autotrans diag. pdf, says between 300-600 ohms. Checking the sensors out is the next step before you go any farther. I mean, it's great you have a P0715, but you need to troubleshoot it. Once you know which one is bad, then go from there. Do you have access to a DVOM? Do you know how to check resistance?

As far as the input sensor/RPM sensor, I've searched and you may have to get one from the dealer, or have someone with vad!s look up the part number. You are right, it is confusing when you are looking online for that part, you need part numbers. The trans connector comes apart--you take it apart to replace the PNP switch. You could solder and splice, but if you do a crap job splicing it, it could cause issues with resistance putting you right back where you are now.

i think someone had a similar issue and found out it was a wire behind the dash rubbing against metal and wore insulation

Thank you for the reply.

I replaced VSS when I got P0715, but it didn't fix the problem so I will check the rpm sensor. I have ohms meter, but I am not 100% sure how to check it. I have to read the pdf file again.

Yeah, I guess if the sensor is bad, a dealer is the only option, which will cost a lot....

Do you know which wire was it?

Hum....I have to maybe remove the dash and check it..

Thank you for the info though.

Ok back again, i did the pcv replacement today and got a look at the sensor you were talking about. the speedo sensor. i have the same one and found that the picture i sent you looks like the one in my car. remember partsgeek. i looked up for a 96 and they have one for our car. of course thats if that is the problem.

I am confused. I am talking about the rpm sensor, not the speedometer sensor. Are we talking about the same part?

I replaced the speedometer sensor. Which one are you talking about here? The one that right below intake pipe? or the one below battery tray?

thanks.
