Is Remap Necessary?

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit of a noob, so bear with me. I welcome any and all advice.

I have a '99 GLT. I just had the automatic transmission rebuilt and installed a cooler. I am putting on a 3" downpipe, 2.5" exhaust, upgrading the 13g turbo to a 16T and I found a set of blue injectors cheap.

Unfortunately, for the time being I'm about out of money, so I'm going to wait until I can afford a RICA softloader.

Question 1 would be can I drive the car with these modifications without any change to the ECU without destroying it or getting 10mpg.

Question 2 would be how much boost can I run without a tune. Someone suggested 14.

Question 3 How do I adjust the boost without changing the ECU. can I just adjust the wastegate and let the ECU figure it out? I have a boost gauge, but not a controller. I'd prefer not to get one and just wait for the tune.

I appreciate your replies.

you can adjust the boost with a manual boost controller but like torquesteer said keep the injectors stock and the stock boost and once you remap let them do it in the tune.

When manually tuning your car you need more than a boost gauge. IMO at the very least you need an EGT/wide band and a det can.

Do MBCs work on ME7? I had always thought that they did not.

you could run a boost controller, i have mine set to 13 psi spikes to 14, car has been running fine for awhile now, as long as you have your stage 0 done you should be fine and be careful with adjusting the boost. you could also give the wastegate arm a turn or 2 and it will kick in your boost a little quicker. up to you, if you do run a boost controller just dont be hitting full boost constantly.

You have a 98 with Motronic 4.4, he has a 99 with the different ME7 EMS.

ME7 you are not able to run MBC. ME 4.4 AND 4.3 and older you ARE able to run MBC. simple enough.

if it were that easy you would have already known about it

You don't need blue injectors for the 16t upgrade, the OEM orange will work just fine.

MBC will work if the boost is under 10lbs, over 10, limp mode everytime your foot gets heavy.

Can't do much without a boost guage....I've got MBC and a boost guage collecting dust in my garage

PM me

with those modifications you won't need a re-tune immediately. but you should get one as soon as you can.

I ran a 15G and MBC at 10psi(about 4 more than stock) for about 4 months, my Air/Fuel was around 13 or something really lean.

adjusting the wastegate only changes how the boost builds not the maximum you can run.

You can always try a manual boost controller, everybody says it won't work on ME7, but I have been running one for almost 2 years now. However, it wouldn't work in a 2002 C70. Also, if boost builds too fast the car will not like it. ETS light will come on, and you will get limited boost.

you can run an MBC on ME7 but it's pointless. The management limits it by torque so you'll be boosting a lot, but the throttle body won't be fully open to limit the airflow.
