A/C Problem

Recommended Posts

So I cant seem to get my ac working, Ive tried recharging it but I seem to get nowhere. I dont even think my compressor is kicking in. Ive never worked on an ac system but am fairly mechanically inclined....any tips as to where I should start?

Thanks!

Sounds like a bad comp cluch if you don't hear it kick on. I would look there first. Ac works not to hard. Its the price of parts that kill you.

You're kind of starting in the middle. Are you pulling a vacuum on the system?

The A/C clutch gap is probably out too far and you should get that in spec, then pull a vacuum and then fill the system. Jump the connectors on the low side pressure switch near the firewall pass side if you need to jump the compressor to get things going on the fill or just to check out whether the clutch gap is too far out. Put about 45 psi in.

Go take the recharge hose you used if it has a gauge and stick it back on the port and run the AC system to see if any of the 134a is left in the system; make sure the hose is sealed on the can end. If your pressure is still at atmosphere (0psi gauge pressure) then you have a leak and you need to pick up a can of UV dye with a UV light.

Ok I turn my ac on and try to jump the compressor and nothing happens. Does this mean i need to replace my compressor. Can i tell if the gap is too much with the compressor in the car or do i have to take it out?

thanks for your help you guys

Take the belly pan shield thing off the bottom of the car. Put it up on jack stands or ramps. Start the car. Poke the AC compressor clutch with a broom stick or dowel, and see if it catches. Just tap it lightly. If it starts spinning, then your clutch has a gap that is too large. There is an article about shimming it with bread bag clips, or zip ties. Lots of folks have luck with that.

Just to clarify... make sure the temp knobs are all the way on blue, and the fan is turned all the way up when you try this.

It could be the clutch gap, but first you need to know if you have power at the compressor. Use a test light or voltmeter to see if you do. If you HAVE power and the compressor isn't running, then fix the clutch gap. If you DON'T have power at the compressor then you need to find out why.
