Shackman
I did a tune up check on my car and found Large amount of carbon. So my teacher rec. i used Seafoam, I followed his direction did not smoke as much as he said it would, let it rest for 5 mins then started it back up smoked a little more, drove it home. when i got it home i check the oil and found White smoke from the Dip stick, intake, and oil filler. got the school Scope Camera and found this. (sorry about pics Camera did not like my Tv) After Sea Foam: Cy 1 Cy 2 Cy 3 Cy 5 Could Not get good pictures of Vertical Scratches ON Cy 3 and 5 fain but i can see themany ideas on what would cause a lot of carbon build up? like that
V1CUT
Yes, there are several causes of carbon. Just to name a few: Running rich Running below normal operating temperature (t-stat stuck open) poor fuel -among others. It is important to have the car fully warmed up before you perform the hotsoak.
Gilhuly
The fact that you didn't smoke that much from the seafoam is probably a positive. Do you have a lot of build up on plugs? all or some? Have you done a compression test? Have your teacher show you something useful like how to do a compression test to actually scientifically measure something as opposed to playing with toys that don't definitively tell you anything empirical. If you have good compression and there is dark matter on plugs etc, then you know it is in the head and a full reconditioning of the head would fix it for sure and new valve stem seals would likely cure things right up. Turbo or N/A?(you need to fill in your profile so we know what you have) You would want to check the intercooler piping and the weep hole on the intercooler for lots of oil as a possibility. How much oil do you go through how often?
Shackman
What started all this was my pick up seal cracked and sucked in air, did not know what happen until it was to late, lost a lot of oil pressure and valves where clicking after that 40 - 50 miles i smelled a little burnt oil so i been checking my oil level still fine no drop no smoke from Pcv or Exh. Then a teacher rec. i use Seafoam so with his help i put some in the Crank and use a Vac line and suck some in 1/3 or a pint. it smoked a little and let it rest for 5 mins then started it back up smoke a little more drove it home and popped the hood and pulled the dip stick seen white smoke then open the oil filler (Engine Running) and seen more white smoke. Replaced the PCV 600 miles ago. Did a oil Change it was still kind of clear not to dirty, smelled like carbon. Just did a compression check / drop down 4 resolutions Dry 1: 150 / 2% 2: 155 / 1% 3: 145 / 0% 4: 145 / 2% 5: 145 / 1% Spec For A N/A 189-
V1CUT
A good hotsoak of seafoam resulys in copious amounts of smoke during burnoff... Sounds like you have a PCV issue.
Shackman
Did a little more checking: -intake smells like fuel/seafoam wet to the touch - pull intake off and clean it and check PCV -got a scan tool check data only thing odd - Cold Engine Not Running, Long Term Fuel Trim -25.6%
GltGreco
Did a little more checking: -intake smells like fuel/seafoam wet to the touch - pull intake off and clean it and check PCV -got a scan tool check data only thing odd - Cold Engine Not Running, Long Term Fuel Trim -25.6% compression numbers seem low to me, but there close across the board so thats a good thing. As for fuel trim (correct me if im wrong, its very possible) but i believe that means that your car has cut down on the amount of fuel it is sending into the mix, this could mean that you were previously running rich, or that something may be acting up causing your car to think or actually want less fuel in the mix, idk tho
V1CUT
Check your 02 sensor for proper operations with a digital voltmeter.
MrWinkey
CArbon build up is not really know on these models unless an old lady had an R car driving to the grocery store and church. What is your query and do you have a driveability issue?
Shackman
New Condition: Car Warm after 10 mins of idling , usually takes 20 mins of Idling Scan Tool Says it 210 - 230 Deg. when wormed up i grab the upper and low hoses (Very Hot almost could not touch it) and there was no pressure could squeeze hose with no effort, usually i cant squeeze the house together. Will bring Lazar Temp. gun and see Degs. For now i am build a back up swatch for the Fan. so i can manually turn it on, just to be on the safe side
Shackman
It Drives fine, but i lost the last motor this way the fuel reg broke, and sent too much fuel to the engine and washed the oil from the Cyl. walls, i am a little paranoid that it might be happing again. Gilhuly
Did you do the compression test warm with plugs out? I agree the #s are a bit low. On the cooling issue, Where is your temp gauge reading? There is only really the fan, the fan relay and the coolant temp sensor involved passing info through the ecu. That back up switch plan is nonsense. Work the problem. Read this thread here
