Will Bad Fuel Pump Relay Cause No Spark?

So I'm trying to work through an intermittent no spark problem on a 94 NA. For a while it would sometimes take about 5 or 6 seconds of cranking to start. Then one night it took forever and I was worried I wouldn't make it home. Once it's running it's fine. I haven't been able to start the car since and have narrowed it down to intermittent spark. Fuel pressure is good at a solid 42 psi, and I've already tried swapping in a good cam position sensor. Could this be the relay? Any other suggestions?

How do you know you don't have spark?

I don't completely agree with Laird. When the relay goes bad it works from time to time. My relay would be fine on initial startup. Then, when I turned the car off and tried to restart. That's when I was unable to start the car. Then, 5-10 mins later it would finally start again. The symptoms went away after replacing the f pump relay.

Maybe I should have said. If you have fuel pressure ALL THE TIME then laird is right. Its not the relay.

However, relays can be an intermitten issue

Good luck

If I attach a spark plug wire/plug to the ignition coil and ground the plug I see very intermittent spark when I crank the engine. I don't think it's the crank position sensor since I've replaced that recently as well. When it was bad it just caused occasional misfires.

intermittent spark? hows the cap and rotor? if those are fine, I would think coil or wires.

Fuel Pump would just be a coincidence as it will never mess with your ability to spark (independent systems). You could always run a bypass wire in the relay socket to jumper it on while you crank and test.
