drjonez
Just checking to see if anyone has any experience or ideas on my problem on my ’01 S60: Car runs fine, mild coolant consumption with no overheating and no driveability problems, aside from some rough running on first start of the day (intermittent). I did some investigating and my cooling system is being pressurized by combustion gases. Compression test is good across all cylinders, leak down test shows some leakage to the cooling system on cylinders 4 and 5. I figured blown head gasket, tore it apart and the head gasket looked fine. I checked the head and deck for flatness, everything looked good. Reassembled with new gaskets and head bolts. The car ran fine for the next month, now the symptoms seem to be reappearing. I’m thinking cracked head or block since I didn’t have the head checked for cracks when it was out. I called my local Volvo dealer and talked to them about any head/gasket/cooling system problems and they said they pretty rare, though the heads seem to warp easily if overheated. Anyone have any thoughts? Ideas?
CJones16
When you did the head gasket change, did you use OEM gaskets? and new head bolts? Maybe turbo is consuming? hmm
Ihatespeedbumps
If you pressure test the cooling system can you find any leaks? You could verify the headgasket repair with a combustion leak checker.
drjonez
When you did the head gasket change, did you use OEM gaskets? and new head bolts? Maybe turbo is consuming? hmm I did use an aftermarket gasket set and new head bolts. I followed the VADIS procedure for the whole thing. I have thought about the turbo consuming coolant, but that still doesn’t explain the leak down test on cylinders 4 and 5. If you pressure test the cooling system can you find any leaks? You could verify the headgasket repair with a combustion leak checker. No leaks when pressurizing the cooling system. The only time I see anything is when I put 40+ PSI into cylinders 4 or 5, then the coolant in the overflow begins to move. By combustion leak checker I assume you mean testing for presence of combustion gases in the coolant. I have done this and it is not conclusive, the fluid did change color, but not by much. Thanks for the replies!

I battled something similar on an 850 I owned once, and I could only get the fluid to change color if the engine was scalding hot.

Guest geoff
Interesting....good information. seems like a LPT B545T/B544T engine. Unlike the R and T5 engines (whitch have slighty smaller cylinder bores)these engines have a tendency to develop cracks between bores, resulting in exhaust fumes and overpressure in the cooling system. howardc64
Been chasing a mystery very slow coolant leak myself on a 01 V70XC with 100k miles. It has the same 2.4t engine as this post. Added dye and haven't found anything yet and haven't done a leak down test yet. The other (probably related?) symptom is the coolant temperature is randomly lower than normal (normal is about mid way on the temp gauge on this car, same as my 01 V70 T5) by about a tick mark on the gauge. Is this an indicator of anything?
