ozzimark
So the time has finally come for me to pursue what I have been wanting to do for a while. I have picked up a used 2002 C70 HPT (B5234T3) engine that I will tear apart and do a modest build up of the internals. Things are not set in stone for all of the parts, but I'm waiting on RSI for 143mm rods and 81.5mm pistons. The rotating assembly will get balanced, the block bored out, and decked if required. Not sure if I'm gonna do any porting work on the head, since I chose the RN engine in the first place because of how well the head flowed compared to the older heads. I'm leaning towards a 56 trim GT2871R with a 0.64 A/R turbine housing. I'm toying with the idea of going larger, but this will be my DD, and I really don't want to wait too long for the turbo to spool up Also, VVT will be staying There are a hell of a lot of things I don't know, and will have to figure out along the way, since this will the first engine I've ever taken apart and put back together The engine, subframe, accessories and transmission showed up yesterday, neatly wrapped, and on two skids, courtesy of bdimag. I didn't have time last night to get to work on it, so I let it just sit there on the skid, in all of its dirty and grimy glory.. Actually, it's really pretty clean for being an 8 year old engine. A bit of oil by the belt pulleys and along the front of the engine, but that's the majority of it I had scheduled a vacation day for other reasons a while back, and it just worked out perfectly that I got to spend the morning working on getting stuff off the engine and putting the engine up on the stand for cleaning up and disassembly. First order of business was getting some parts out of the way so that I had better access to the stuff I'm working on.. plus, it all has to come off anyway I plan on using the -98 style manifold, but keeping that cute little power steering pump when the build is done. Does anyone know of any differences in pressure/flow from the old style pump to the newer one? Before I could lift the engine up a bit to get the transmission off, I had to get them off the subframe. The trans mount was still attached, so I had to pull it partially off the skid to take off those two 18mm nuts that hold the mount to the subframe. It's free! This will go in the corner for later use. As a side note, anyone picking up a C70 subframe for the solid bushings, make sure it's from a convertible, not a coupe Next up is taking the transmission off. Just a bunch of M10 bolts and a few whacks with a rubber mallet to break to two apart. I didn't undo the bolts for the torque converter beforehand, so I had to figure out how it was attached. After trying to pull it off and gently pry it for a while, I noticed a bolt on the back side when looking through the starter hole, and realized how it came off... Move the engine stand into docking position! Docking complete! Btw, if anyone wants to take that AW55-50SN out of my garage... B)
(n)A-GAME
I'll be watching this thread. Looking forward to the results, because I'll be doing something similar. Will you be installing an M56 while you're at it?
ozzimark
Thanks Most likely I'll just swap over the M56 that's in my car now and drop a Quaife in it at the same time. If I can score a fwd M66 for cheap, I'll go that route :D
tsuehpsyde
Looking forward to what this build has in store for that T5M. I thought you already paid for/had your pistons tho?
JVC
All of that work looks exactly the same as pulling my S80 engine... except... there was one more cylinder. haha
ozzimark
Funny how similar all the whiteblocks look, huh? Looking forward to what this build has in store for that T5M. I thought you already paid for/had your pistons tho? I have, just waiting for RSI to get the rest of the GB order in and ship them out. It's only taken.. well, forever
(n)A-GAME
Are you going with a Turbo Tuner or will you be modifying the block like Jon did in his budget build to stick with your current tune?
Fitzy
I have decided...I want a garage like yours someday!
tchnprgrmr
watching this thread, sounds like some good stuff planned for the build. Are you going to stay with the ETM when you switch manifolds or go to manual?

BlackT5
Should be a fun project. So you are just going to port the -98 intake mani to mate up with the larger ports? Too bad you didn't get the new intake mani with the motor, you could have cut the runners off and built a custom plenum. No VVT on the intake? but you plan on keeping the exh VVT.. building a controller? What are you using to tune the motor? standalone? TT? What is the difference in valve sizes with the new motors compared to the -98 T5s?
Johann
Please correct me if mistaking but you talk about 143mm RSI rods while your engine comes with 147 mm rods. The 143 mm rods are used with a 93.2 mm stroked crank. Unless the piston compression height is matched to the combination of a 90 mm stroke crank and 143 mm rods it is not going to fit. Just a FYI. Good luck with the project.

I'm having trouble understanding.. Are you saying 143mm rods with the 93.2mm crank will not work because the stock rods are 147mm? Maybe: late at night + trying to read = fail
