mulcy
So I've been trying to diagnose a front end vibration/clunking for a while. Did new endlinks, control arms, check the tie rod, spring seats etc. but it wouldn't go away. Today I pulled down the entire strut assembly and shock mount seemed really loose (the thing that attaches to the mounts under the hood.) It spins freely around the shock piston and I can very easily wiggle it up and down. Is it supposed to be like this? Which of the two nuts at the top of the strut holds it down (and will I need spring compressors to tighten it)?
Get Some
if i think you mean what you mean the upper strut mount is shot.. replace it with xc90 upper strut mounts thier heavier duty. i guess its just a common occurrence on our cars... Exactly. Probably the upper strut mount. Does it seem to go away at times or be better/worse at times? That's been my experience
JRL
That is called a spring seat and you said you installed them
Bah
http://members.shaw.ca/heeeeee/strut/6.JPG - on the right hand side Strut mount - thing on top Spring seat - below the strut mount. Generally its the spring seat goes bad, but after 100k+ miles, the bearing in the middle of the strut mount could begin to go bad and need to be replaced. My understanding is if you tighten the strut nut on the top and it goes freely, then the spring seat is shot.
mulcy
ok, so to clarify, the spring seats are definitely fine. it's the mount on the right in the picture that I think is bad. I tore it all down and the bearing definitely has some play in it. Probably just have to get a new mount.

I myself have been in the game for some..my 220k+ suspension is dieing for all new lol... Check out Tasca and FCP...i've heard the aftermarket strut mounts are like 40-50k usage..while the OEM is 100k+. If you have the money, i'd get the OEM of course. I myself am willing to go cheap on my 93 though lol...anyone have first hand experience with the aftermarket strut mounts vs OEM? 100$ a pop is pricey for a 93..not my 96 though =p
7 VII 7
Go with OEM. Fcpgroton has them for under $
mulcy
Thanks everybody. Ordered a new OEM strut mount from FCP. The strut itself also seems to be pretty shot. It's hard to tell by bouncing the car, but with everything apart I can push the piston all the way down and watch it return super slowly. Looks like it's time to start saving up for some bilstein HDs...
