Fender Rolling/Cutting

Since my car is down and I'm building an engine I need something to do inbetween waiting for parts. I'd like to put some larger rear spacers on it. Right now I have 18x7.5 et 38 wheels with 225/35 tires. I would like to go with 225/40's on my next set though. I have 8.5mm spacers on the rear right now and they just BARELY clear the fenders (unmolested). I'd like to roll my fenders or cut them if that's a better option and fit at least 20mm spacers back there. The fronts are fine, they're actually a little poked but have no clearance problems even at full lock on large bumps so I'd like to leave them.

Anyone have similarly sized wheels and have done this?

I've tried 225/40/18s on my 850, with major fender rolling and I even pulled the fender a good half inch outward. Wasn't getting any rubbing on the fenders at all, but the major problem was that on any turning or close to full lock, the wheel rubs the inside chassis quite easily, it started severely thinning out the tires so I was forced to get another set of tires after significant damage to them.

Spacers might have helped the inner well rubbing, but that would have caused fender clearance issues, which I was pretty much at the limit.

my rims were 18x8 ET 35

Hmm, maybe it's that extra .5" of wheel width that does it, because I still have enough clearance at full lock to fit a 225/40. I have plenty of room with the 225/35's. It's just the outside fender clearance I'm worried about. I do have the largest steering bump stops installed though and have a turning radius of a limo, so I'm sure that helps.
