Tried To Fix P0440 Issue, But I Need Some Help

Hi,

I've made the thread 3 month ago, but I just wanted to make a new one.

I have P0440 cel, which is evap leak. A mechanic did smoke test and said that a hose top of the fuel tank was leaking.

I asked VS people about it, and they gave me goodDIY link and part number.

Finally, I got the part from a dealer(paid $34) #9463088, and today I dropeed the fuel tank. I found out that the fuel hose was much longer than what I got.

I am talking about the hose that one side is bigger than the other side. I didn't even bother to remove it because I have a wrong part....

I also visually checked for nay crak, rip...but the hose looked fine...If the hose was leaking, it should have craks or something....no???

Anyway, I put everything back together and I need some help on the part....

My car is 1996 850R......

Thank you.

I just now put full gas, and tried to see whether there is leak, or smell of fuel.

I've searched here, and kind of got an idea where to check, but the area was dry. No signs of drip or wetness around it.

I drove the car back home, and tried to check evap purge valve.

If you look at it from the front of the car, top hose goes intake manifold, and the bottom hose goes...I don't know where but it goes to bottom somewhere.

I couldn't remove the top hose because it was so tight, so I removed the bottom one. Do I suppose to get vacuum from the bottom hose???

I also connected a vacuum tester to the valve, and it doesn't hold vacuum.....does the valve suppose to hold vacuum?

One more time, I didn't remove the top hose, and removed the bottom hose, connected the tester. The purge valve doesn't hold vacuum.

Please give me some advice.

Thank you.

I had gotten that code. replaced the EVAP valve with the kit from FCP. included a connector/adapter for the new EVAP valve. and an in-line filter.

I never tried anything with the gas tank hose or anything so I have no other experience with this issue.

it wasn't exactly cheap either.

I have been spending $$ to fix this problem, and I don't want to spend anymore $$ unless I am 100% sure.

I just want to know how to test evap valve and if it's bad, I will replace it. I just want to know which side should have vacuum. The top or bottom?

well, it is basically an electric check valve. So vacuum should be downstream from the valve. I can't think of which way it faces at the moment.

But if the valve is bad and stuck closed then it still might tell you what you you want to find out.

I think the kit was about $120 shipped by the way. can't remember for sure. and I can't find the kit on the FCP site for some reason.

Goes over testing the evap.

Thank you for the file. I will read it through and test the evap valve.

i had a write up on this when i fixed the evap leak on the 855.

Thank you for the picture. Are those pictures bottom front of your car?

I assume that the hose is the one connected to the evap valve and....where?

I will try to find your thread.

Thanks.

The hose pictured is located above the fuel filter (near the tank bottom). Very common spot for an evap P0440 leak to occur. Also, there is a short length of rubber hose connecting two hard lines under the passenger floorboard (underside of the car), sometimes this hose pops off on one end.

To check the evap valve, remove it and see if it will hold vacuum on both sides. If it fails to hold on both sides, it is shot. If there is very slow leakage, it probably won't be a problem.

Never had a leaky fuel tank vent hose throw an evap code though it is certainly possible. In order to get the right hose for your car you will have to provide the VIN number to the dealership. There were a lot of mid-year changes to the vent hoses and it isn't a clear cut year thing...

I thought the hose is the one connected evap valve and charcoal cainster, which is located driver side under the front bumper. I guess not :)

I will check the hose today. I will also check the hose connected to hard lines too.

To remove the valve, do I just pop it out? The hose that connected from valve to intake manifold was really tight when I tried to remove. I was afraid to rip off the hose.

So I just connect a vacuum tester(pressure tester)to one side and test each side?

I will check any stain or wetness around the fuel tank hoses....when I filled gas yesterday, I didn't smell any gas fume inside of the cabin, and around the gas cap or tank....so I don't think it's leaking...but we will see.

OK, I removed the evap valve, and I hooked up a compress tester.

The valve that goes to intake manifold holds vacuum fine, but the bottom that goes to chalcoal canister didn't hold vacuum. It barely holds 4 psi. O pupmed more air, and it didn't go above 8 psi, and it slowly went down till 3 psi. So does this mean the valve went south?

Thanks.

The valve is probably fine. My pressure tester/gauge is my mouth after wiping the fittings. It won't hold vacuum perfectly. When it utterly fails it won't hold any vacuum/pressure on one side at all.

Thank you for the reply.

Shoot....now I don't know what cause the cel P0440....I've checked everything that I can...and I thought the valve was shot....
