FAST850R
Hello, I have 1996 850R with 142k miles. I have had this car about 8 month and I need to ask some questions. First, does 850r brake suppose to feel kind of soft? I kind of feels like my car doesn't stop well, compare to newer cars. All the brake pads have 80% meet left. I also noticed that when I am stepping on brake, while car is slowing down, if I step on the brake again, the brake pedal doesn't go deep as the first time. I mean if I step on it 2~3 times, the pedal doesn't go all the way in. Is this normal? If, this is normal or if 850r brakes are not that great, what is the best way to improve the stopping power? Since steel brake lines are much cheaper than big brake kits, I am thinking to install them, but I need to know whether they are worth it. Second, I don't like feel of the steering wheel. It's not responsive....how can I make it tighter? What parts do I need to change or check for this? I also think that the OEM steering wheel is too large. Are there any smaller wheel that has air bag? Any suggestions? Thanks.
Zappo
Change your brake fluid and it will probably solve your braking problem.

Do you have pictures of s90 steering wheel? What year of s90 fits to 850? Change your brake fluid and it will probably solve your braking problem. Ok, I will change it this week! Just regular brake fluid is fine, correct? Thanks.

AverageVolvo
+1 I have the same Steering wheel. I got mine from a 960 Volvo. Great feel cleaner airbag look.
FAST850R
Thank you for the picture. It still looks pretty big, but if it's smaller than 850's, I have to find it So it's definitely better than 850's correct? How do you guys like it? Definitely a nice upgrade IMO. It's the smallest wheel you are going to find that matches and bolts in and uses an airbag. Otherwise you're going to have to go with an aftermarket wheel which requires a hub adapter, and most likely doesn't have an air bag.

Since it's my DD, I am not going to get an after market wheel. It's time to go junk yards!!!!!!!!!!!!
matt b
Check your owner's manual, I think you have to use DOT3 but I could be wrong. While you're changing your fluid, check your brake lines and make sure they're not so old and worn that they're starting to seep. I've had that happen once before and it's not fun. krn
The Volvo OEM brake fluid is DOT 4+. Meets dot 4 requirements with slightly higher boiling point. Looks like that has been discussed before: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/7536-why-dot-4-plus/ Now, having said that I use ATE Super Blue Brake Fluid (DOT 4). FAST850R
Thank you for the information of brake fluid. I will flush it this weekend with power steering fluid. I checked the brake lines and they were kind of old, and that's why I was thinking to do stainless brake lines to improve stopping power. Since I have never installed them, I just don't know how much improvement I can get. Also, does anyone know how to remove the steering wheel?? lol I went to a junk yards and I found bunch of 940 and 960's steering wheel, but I didn't know how to remove it. Well I also didn't have the right tool. Thanks.
jnderr
The super blue is especially good for fluid changes as you can tell when all the old fluid is out, assuming you did not have the blue in previously.
johnloves850's
Honestly, it sounds like your brakes aren't properly bled. Try bleeding them first and if that doesn't help, spend every penny you need to.
