total noob here, looking at a 2000 model year car, but have always liked these since i test drove a JRL Car back in 2004, (always leased new before this now have a Co car and only need this for personal use) so here goes....Well i got to the "dealer" (very small with only about 6 cars for sale, most of his business is repair) and saw this 2000 XC SE very nice clean condition (no rust at all, very important in NH) and proceeded to take it for a test drive, i observed the following; Car started and ran well, no overheating, key was stuck in the ignition, and this was a known problem, he had ordered a new shifter pnp switch which will be installed prior to delivery. When taking off from a standstill, the gas pedal felt a little sluggish, and when the turbo kicked in ( it has some lag, I'm not sure what is normal) the whole car would kind of "rise up" and pull slightly to the right, when i released the throttle it would correct "sink back to normal" and track straight, also i noticed some thunking on the right side going over bumps. He offered to fix any probs before delivery, and we talked about a warranty esp for the transmission (bevel gear, AWD system) in addition the car has been sitting for about a month and i noticed the brakes are a little numb (I'm not sure how to describe it, but they feel a little spongy) anyway, it is a one owner, clean carfax, low mile (89K) car and it is cheap (4K), so I'm tempted to take a risk on it, anything i need to check or ask about? sorry for being long winded, i do need a semi reliable DD out of this and do not have a bunch of cash to spend, also sorry I'm asking you to diagnose a problem without seeing the car, just wondered if anyone had experienced these issues before. Thanks

The thunking could be the endlinks or maybe the ball joints. I had the same thing happen on my car. To replace the ball joint you would have to get an entire lower a-arm for that side.

Make sure the tires are evenly worn and match, otherwise the AWD system may bust prematurely.

Good luck! :)

The awd system, 5 spd auto, ETM, and the list goes on and on.

5 Speed auto? I think we're talking about a different car, unless you're talking about the R version. I had two of them (98 & 00) and never had a problem. Mine has a four speed w/OD. I think all the MY00's did.
