Keaton85
WTF. If you are replacing a HG replace the freaking head bolts. They are STRETCH BOLTS. It's not like they are $150 either, they are cheap. And don't buy aftermarket. No idea why you'd even risk messing up a job like this because you were too cheap to buy $30 insurance on something that SHOULD be replaced anyways. Like ive said 100s of times, reusing them once more is a none issue! Yes on the data sheets it's a good idea to replace them every time BUT in the real world it works. Every little anal detail that most of you guys go through is not what 99% of mechanics do....
7 VII 7
Dude have you even done a head before? 3 times, 1 time on a Volvo I understand you can use them again, but if they are cheap to get NEW ones why not remove that variable of having the bolts reused harming your progress in doing the job 100%. Volvo5.0
Every little anal detail that most of you guys go through is not what 99% of mechanics do.... I noticed you said mechanics, not GOOD mechanics. I'm sure the OP will make the right decision with regards to the bolts I'm not trying to change your mind. If you've had good luck with re-using them that's great!! But saying 99% of mechanics aren't concerned with details .....I'm sure that's not true ;)

Replacing headbolts is not anal. I don't care if it worked for you, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. I think you have a good amount of experience working on these cars, and generally, I appreciate your knowledge, but this is one thing I will never agree with you on. Even if mechanics do it. It's 33 freaking dollars. That's NOTHING. If you're going to go through the effort of replacing the HG yourself, or pay $$$ for someone to do it, USE NEW BOLTS. It's a shortcut NOT worth taking. 3 times, 1 time on a Volvo I understand you can use them again, but if they are cheap to get NEW ones why not remove that variable of having the bolts reused harming your progress in doing the job 100%. When have you ever replaced a Volvo HG?

I totally agree with you last spring I did one on a 850 NA with no issues replacing the head bolts with OEM new ones... car is still running like a top :)
