mulcy
I've been doing a lot of research trying to pick the right shocks for my S70T5M and came across this article, which I found extremely useful. Most of the information on here and other forums is very opinion-based (e.g. bilstein HDs are good with stock springs but too harsh if you're lowered, konis are good one turn from full stiff, etc.). It was enlightening to see some actual graphs from shock dynos and hear about the variability between individual shock absorbers (particularly the konis, where 1 turn from full stiff can be very different between shocks). At the end of the day I picked the HDs since they should be simple, stiff, well matched, and still provide a decent ride with stock springs. Fingers crossed on the 'decent' ride... http://farnorthracing.com/autocross_secrets18.html
Gizmo
I've found my HDs to be remarkable with stock springs for just about anything that's not Brooklyn potholes. Never really got their reputation as boneshakers, but then again I've never lowered my car (see previous potholes). Hope you enjoy them too
Dave 54
Wifes T5R has HD's with stock springs and I love them. I don't think they are harsh at all with the stock springs.
NEU
Always loved HD even w/TME springs, even though I can only use them on the fronts... I've had HD's on about every car I've own since I started to drive. I think the guys that complain about them being harsh are pussies and should move to a better part of the country with less potholes...
ozzimark
Cool article, it's always fun to see things taken apart, and actual empirical test data Now we just need to decide what damping and spring stiffness is best for what our car does most of the time

NEU
Has anyone here ever modified the Bil's to be take-aparts? If you want to get them re valved/rebuilt you can send to to Bilstien in San Diego to have them revalve the compressoin and rebound, any way you want for $55 each. Dave Barton did that with a set for his 245ti back in 03' so maybe the price has gone up a bit.
aggarcia
Is it true that the HD raise the car one inch? I would like to lower my 850R without slamming in to the ground - bad roads in Houston. Car you use lowering springs on the HD? AG
Dave 54
^^yes and yes. my nieghbor has HD's with H&R's and he sits slightly lower then stock, might have droped him a total of 1/2", he was pissed. I'm sure after about 50K they'll sag a lil'.

It's because they us high pressure nitrogen shocks vs. oil in Koni or low pressure nitrogen like the cheaper Touring or others.
regime
I have HD's on my T5-R with stock springs. They are great. If they are too hard for you... buy a caddy.
mulcy
Thanks for the responses guys. Looking forward to installing the new shocks. Wouldn't it be great if IPD provided a shock dyno graph that overlayed the HD, TC, Koni sport and Sachs shocks/struts for P1 volvos? It would certainly make deciding between the options that much easier.
