aggarcia
How much real difference is there between the straight and angled flange turbos? My 97 R has the straight flange and I see that the IPD Stage III is only the angled flange turbo and exhaust. AG
project_850
Believe it or not, about 200F in EGT's separates the straight flange from the angle flange 760 if you're running the iPD stage III tune. My 854 T5M has an 18T wheel and straight flange OBX-back, and my 855R M59 has an 18T compressor wheel and 760/angle. It's actually a sizeable difference... 1300F EGT's sustained WOT to 3rd gear in the R and 1500F EGT's in the straight flange 854.
lookforjoe
Just look at the port difference - ... it's no surprise the later housing flows better
aggarcia
I have seen the pictures of the various flanges and the corresponding size differences. My question is how much real power difference is there between the two with say an 18T turbo. The IPD stage III is only angled flange. Is the performance difference worth the expense of getting a angled flange turbo and matching down pipe. AG
Zappo
You probably won't notice the power difference. The IPD tune isn't set for the exhaust housing anyway.
Big Will
If you really don't want to invest in an angled flanged downpipe you could always swap the exhaust side of the turbo - I think if the tune is meant for an angled flange that it's probably optimized for that but still, probably not the biggest deal. TRACStar
I've had both flanges on my car and the one thing I can tell you is that swapping to the angled housing greatly reduced the huge torque spike when the turbo really starts spooling. With the straight flange it felt awesome with the huge torque spike and made the car a beast starting from a roll. But in the same breath it struck fear into my heart every time it hit wondering of my rods were going to take it. Even though you lose the large spike in torque with the angled housing, overall you'll still make more power and IMO be safer doing it. If your going to drop the dime to go stage III follow their recommendations and get an angled DP. If you don't feel like spending an arm and a leg for theirs call a few exhaust shops and see of they can help you out, and keep your eyes peeled in the FS section for an angled OBX DP. Keep Calm Chive On
I know this is dumb... but there are various 13T's with angled housings on them in the JY. Yes i would need a new downpipe made but if i were to just swap the housings are they the same? Seeing as i can get it pretty cheap most likely it would really just come down to having a angled flange DP made & pray it goes on as smoothly as the OBX system did for me
ozzimark
Yes i would need a new downpipe made but if i were to just swap the housings are they the same? If it's a TD04HL-13T from a Volvo that does not have the manifold integrated into the turbine housing yet, then yes. However, even if the outlet flange flows more, the TD04HL is still a damned small turbine
DARKSIDE
IIRC...there are two angled sizes...
TRACStar
IIRC...there are two angled sizes... This is true, but they're both significantly bigger than a straight housing. The "larger" one is almost mike a factory ported version, it flows better but inlet/outlet is very similar.
ozzimark
They're the same "size" afaik, the difference is in the turbine nozzle area, 6cm² vs 7cm²
Bah
I thought with the bigger one (i have the 7cm^2 in my garage lol...seems huge) your actually more at risk for spikes etc, since you have a small turbo that's a fast a spooler with less restriction which can now spool out of control w/o proper tuning/Boost controller? Atleast that's what i was told about the dangers of the 19t with it, although i imagine that it's affects at 17PSI are not going to stand out and w/ the tune will likely be even safer. Personally i would switch to angled if you've got it out etc...the DP from OBX for angled is >>> then the straight pipe version as well, incase your tight on money. 850T5M
Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have a 16T angled from an 02 V70. It should fit on my 850 with an angled OBX dp right? What makes the angled DP better than the straight (strictly OBX)? Thanks!
TRACStar
They're the same "size" afaik, the difference is in the turbine nozzle area, 6cm² vs 7cm² If you look at them side by side there are noticeable differences in the size and smoothness of the flow paths. Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have a 16T angled from an 02 V70. It should fit on my 850 with an angled OBX dp right? What makes the angled DP better than the straight (strictly OBX)? Some turbos have different coolant port layouts but are still useable with a bit of work. Personally I have a 16T from what I was told came off an 05 S60 T5 and it bolted right up. The angled DP's have a larger inlet flange to match the larger outlet of the angled housing.
