Chirping When The Heat Is On

Sam

Recommended Posts

Seem only to happen most predominately when it is cold. Turn the heat on and from somewhere in the dash on the passenger side there is a very annpying squeeling/chirping that happens. You can hear it clearly from the oustide of the car as well. I thought something with the motor, but that is in the center isn't it?

Thanks for any input

It sounds like the motor is going. They're located on the passenger side right under the glove box. At first you will notice it more when it's colder out.

It could go on quite long this way, but one thing I noticed on my 96 850 was that I went through two speed control resistors within a year before I replaced the motor.

You can see how to get at things here:

yup, you can probably put it off for a while by leaving the fan on a faster setting, or taking out the fan and oiling it.

If you dont have the cabin air filter retrofit, this might be a good time to do that, my fan had an incredible amount of crud on it, im sure thats likely partially to blame for the fan failure. You may also notice as you stop when the car is cold you hear a nasty sounding groan, its also the fan bearing.

If your really trying to pinch the pennies as i am, try and find one used from a 96 or 97 on car-part.com. Newer the better means its got fewer miles and has been sitting around for less time. Not sure if the s/v fan will fit?
