Oreo931
Good call Justin. I made the same mistake and destroyed a tranny and torque converter. See R forum thread there: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/98784-the-tranny-thread/ At the least, I'd replace the torque converter...I'd spend another $50 to save myself from removing and installing a motor again. Mine didn't make any crazy noises... no noises to be exact. Do you think I would still need a TC? Where's the best place to get just the TC? I wouldn't want to have to go to the JY and pull one. Keaton85
I have a few if you want one, although I would wait to see if it's damaged or not.

Ok.... looks like I'll know more this weekend. How will I gauge damage? I understand that gross physical damage would require replacement. Adam, What did your TC look like after broken? I saw the image in your thread, but I'm guessing that was the new one?

I suggest replacing it because you don't know what happened to the splines internally. It would suck to have to redo everything AGAIN just bc the T/C is messed up. You'd probably spend the same money buying another t/c as you would replacing fluids from having to do everything a 3rd time. that's why I'd just get a new one. I'd rather be safe than sorry. That's pretty good logic... but it would have to be locally... shipping on that damn thing would be 50+ bucks. any ideas? *heading to Wanted section* listed: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/139085-torque-converter/

It shouldn't be nearly that expensive...
AverageVolvo
OP GET VADIS Detailed steps of removing transmission. You DO NOT have to remove the engine or subframe. You drop the control arms and axles loosen struts and tilt the subframe out leaving nearly everything connected in the engine bay. Heck you dont even have to drain fluids. Can be done with floor jacks and stands and hand tools in a Day. PM me with any questions. For 110$ I will come over Tomorrow and pull out your old trans and put the new one in for you, you will just have to reassemble the suspension. We can get your old one out and the new one in in about 4-6 hours. I have my own tools and jacks and I have pulled 12+ of these as well as more than a half dozen manual swaps I MAY be able to get you a used trans and Tc as well apprx 250$ from my full serve guy. I would offer to help, but I have my my own car apart at the moment and am desperately searching for the time to fix it Brett, Thanks for the advice... I have VADIS that I bought and haven't gotten around to loading it on my new Win 7 machine. Sounds a lot easier by the way you describe, but I can't picture being able to get enough clearance with jack stands. I'll look into it tonight... If I can find instructions that give me sufficient confidence, I would bust it. You mind if I give you a call tomorrow in case I stuck with a question? Yeah you drop the tranny out the side without a lift! You will hate yourself and the guy that gave you the advice! Screw that!!!!!!!! Thanks... gonna look into it. EDIT: found a write-up (albeit for RWD car: BMW 2002) ... barring the slight differences... you think this would be the right way to go?

I DO ALL MY WORK WITH JACKS AND JACK STANDS> NO fancy azz lift for me. Heck pulled 6+ manual swap kits with handtools and jacks @ the JY. TRUST ME. Out the side. I have done it every which way possible. Out the top, Drop subframe etc...
jdlc
Yeah you drop the tranny out the side without a lift! You will hate yourself and the guy that gave you the advice! Screw that!!!!!!!! Binglax sort of mentioned the same in my thread - and I do believe he's speaking out of experience having done it in different ways. In my case, logistics dictate I do it via subframe drop, and it was not as bad as I thought it would be. It was my first time doing this, and the only thing I managed to break was the front O2 sensor which I neglected to disconnect. Aside from me, I know Vagabond and Ozark Lee did it recently via subframe drop method. Reximus
Agreed I did one out the side and F that . Get two jackstands and a lift and go at it . speaking of which, i actually tried the instructions on vadis in the shop... was not able to complete the step where you drop the sub-frame on one side, and use "special tool" which is a C shaped transmission jack adapter to lift the transmission out of that opening. ended up dropping the whole sub-frame and with engine support bar on top of the car...

I get pissed as it is using a lift and the correct volvo tool fitted to the tranny. Anyway, it doesnt really matter, as to each their own...
