Homemade Short Ram Intake

I wanted an air intake like the ones from IPD or Eurosport. I believe they go for around $190. After looking at it for awhile I figured I could make one. I used a $14 sheet of aluminum and just cut it out with tin snips. I strongly recommend making a cardboard template first. I spent all day fitting and re-cutting.

I used a piece of $3 1/2" pipe insulation from Home Depot for the seal. It seals up nicely to the hood to create a closed box. I paid $60 for the K&N filter, which just clamps on with a hose clamp.

The stock intake tube runs into it underneath the filter. I removed the debris shield from the intake where it meets the grille. I'm really not too concerned about water or anything getting in there that high up and it would be much too dense for the air cleaner to pull it in.

If you watch the video on the IPD site it shows how it doesn't really change the ambient temperature much from the stock air box, and I don't know if it adds the horsepower they claim, but the sound when the turbo spools up is awesome.

that is a very well thought out and clean design. i might paint it to help reduce the chances for rust.

Good thought about painting. I'm not worried about aluminum rusting, but I was thinking about temperature reflection, retention - I'll have to look into that. Another thing I want to do is put a rubber edge on the bottom where it crosses the wiring harness. I don't want it to start cutting into my wiring. I am going to use vacuum hose, slit it and slide it over the edge.
