johnloves850's
yes, the part about not needing to cross hatch on some pistons I forget what the coating is, but you can buy piston rings with a special coating that do not require crosshatching. Most piston rings do require crosshatching to seat correctly though. I guess that post was kinda dumb sounding/confusing
Keep Calm Chive On
With you having the gauges in the ECC spot & stuff does that mean you have no aircon or anything for that matter? I can live without aircon but I do want to make sure i have defroggers & stuff. I love the switches, I always wanted a couple of those red missle switch buttons on my car but it wouldnt look to good cause I dont have any fancy shit like you do. as for the rust, I never would have thought of the battery acid but we have intentionally rusted a few items before. We sand blasted one (it was a small item) to rough up the surface. Perhaps lightly hitting it with some WD40 & steel wool might expose more surface area to help the rust accululate faster. You would have to do it lightly or somehow figure out how to make it look even but im sure you would notice rust faster

Anyhow kudos to a quick build and a job well done. Love the bags are for groceries sticker.

Distort
Care to share your method on chopping the coils on the springs? How did you get it to seat properly in the strut? Heat it up and bend the end to make the hook end again?
Falcone
Wow thread revival. The Bbq was taken off the road by the local po po a few weeks ago, actually two days before I was taking it off the road (not winter driving it this year). Long story short, my volvo has been too hella cool for the local popo for quite some time now, and they got me rocking bald front tires as seen in the following pic (ive had much worse, and so have most of you). These are bald and unsafe Its been an on going battle, and they finally got me. They took the plates and ownership from me. I got the ownership back, but its now stamped with an "unfit vehicle" stamp. Awesome. I need a new saftey and e-test, which i'll get in the spring. But what that means is that I get to play with her all winter. I rebuilt my 3582r, and have been working on a new 900cc tune, I can'twait to dyno her in the spring. Its also getting a full visual makeover, i'm getting inspiration from a tank. Sh!t will be awesome. lol start a white bumper club lol. Definitly Excellent work my friend. I appologize for not being around ktown anymore! I loved parking my 850 next to yours, was always such a stark contrast. Glad to hear from you Gavin. I was wondering why I haven't seen that beaut of a red 850 for a while. Hope things are going well, happy new year man, give me a call when you'rein town next, we'll grab a pint or some sh!t. Quality Did you get piston rings that did not require crosshatching? Some do, some don't, but if they did, your rings won't last long without a light hone jobber. I always cross hatch. With you having the gauges in the ECC spot & stuff does that mean you have no aircon or anything for that matter? I can live without aircon but I do want to make sure i have defroggers & stuff. I love the switches, I always wanted a couple of those red missle switch buttons on my car but it wouldnt look to good cause I dont have any fancy stuff like you do. as for the rust, I never would have thought of the battery acid but we have intentionally rusted a few items before. You would have to do it lightly or somehow figure out how to make it look even but im sure you would notice rust faster As robbie already pointed out, its in the glovebox. I have no a/c it weight way too much, the car is gutted. But since I live in Canada, and last winter I dd'd it, I need defrost. (notice the tent, I roll like that hahaha) I love the switches too, sometimes I drive around with a commando headset on, and I pretend i'm flying a jet plane. I gave up on the rust, its so played out. Maybe after a few years of natural rust, i'll throw it back on. Cheers Really old pic of first test fit (shows the ecc) You are refering to Moly rings -I don't think Falcone used those. Anyhow kudos to a quick build and a job well done. Love the bags are for groceries sticker. Nope didn't use those. Thanks man and i would still cross hatch.... +1. Definitly Care to share your method on chopping the coils on the springs? How did you get it to seat properly in the strut? Heat it up and bend the end to make the hook end again? Sure, at first I cut two coils off the back, and 2.5 off the front, on origional shocks/struts. Rocked it like that for a year, it looked like this. But you need to roll your fenders, these are stock steels and rubber, and they reverse rolled my fender hahaha I now have a custom coilover setup with 7inch 450lb springs all around. I also modded the top hats in the front, so the springs sit higher in the body. I can actually lower it so my side skirts sit .25 of an inch off the pavement static, and tucking 16in rims, but I brake the sh!t out of oil pans. So it stays the height in the pics on the first page. I picked up a winter beater for 300 bux a few months ago. Pluses are that its got a getrag 240, a 4.10lsd and a pos m42 4 banger. Its slow as balls right now, but its rwd, and I love e30's (first two cars were e30's). Its getting the 2jz I have in the spring, after I blow the sh!t out of the stock m42 with boost. Giving it my tired but tested 15g. My roomates project car, I sware he's fcking retarded in the head. I'm swapping a d16a6 in, and wondering why the fck bother????? and how the bbq sits as of now, its sad, but I start it and royallypiss the neighbours off with burnouts and fire (no fuel cut, ignition cut instead, much better). The cops make their daily check up to make sure she hasn't moved. Its hella dumb It will be fun, and will get the same skankerific treatment the volvo got. I can't wait Oh and just to re-iterate, Bags are for b!tcches, I mean groceries, and BMW's are teh slow and stupid. and because i'm a d!ck thanks for the compliments/criticizms, I appreciate it. Keep your eye out in the spring for something that is faster than direhhea, and looks worse, because it'll be the 854. Cheers fellas Mike
Distort
So did you re-do the hook in the spring, or just rock it in the strut just how it was cut?
URO_S60
A few VW guys in my hometown did the rust hood and hatch look by pouring lots and lots of mineral spirits and paint thinner on them and giving the surface a rough and really quick sand, then threw a match on them and set them on fire until they charred up. Once the fuel for the fire burned out and before warping happened from the high heat they roughed up the surface again and re-did that whole process yet again. After the second time they then let battery acid sit for about 48-72 on some of the hoods it may have needed ~96 hours of soaking. After than dry it off and they were pretty much done, some took it apon themselves to do a 18-24 hour salt&water bath and that was that. If you are still interested I can ask for some photos and triple check the exact way they did it but as far as I remember that was it to a T. Love the car BTW, I also know how it sucks working outside when I was into the DSM's I did 3 engine pulls and countless rear end/axle changes in the freezing cold and elements of nature so I have respect for that lol. Great idea with the ziptie stitches too.
Falcone
^ Thanks man. I'm all right for the rust procedure, its currently sitting in my backyard "aging" naturally. I'll see in the spring what it looks like. But the car is going tolook like a tank, and cool tanks aren't rusty, so I won't be able to put it on. I will just to trollthough. So did you re-do the hook in the spring, or just rock it in the strut just how it was cut? Nope, just left them. They only slipped off twice, and it makes a massive twang noise, so I just pulled over and fixed it quickly. I love when stuff like that happens though. I did end up bending just the tips in. They were fine without though, they only popped when I was being retarded with my mad front wheel hop and torque steer around corners being like ricky bobby.
