Time For A Stupid Question!

Yeah - blah to descriptive titles!

Stock system has 8 speakers. Almost every headunit I've seen has 4 outputs.....how would I power the other 4 speakers? Would I have to buy 2 4-channel amps to go completely headunitless?

ok, when it says that you have 8 speakes... you really only have 6. The tweet/woofer in the dash/door only counts as one speaker. Many people score new HU's and get a factory wiring harness from Cardomain and have no problems. But if you want big sound you'll want to go the amplifier sound. Especially if you think you'll change out your OE speakers.

Kevin is right, so the factory amp is only 3 channels and not 4 then?

And when buying an aftermarket amp what would you look for as far as channels go?

Sorry for all the ?'s.  Thanks  y'all. :)

FWIW guys, I'm running a JL 300/4 amp... no problems at all. My kenwood deck isn't powering any speakers whatsover. :)

Kev, I am looking to do the same thing, how does wiring go? I wanna do 2 sets of componets, that would be only 2 channels right? I looking to push at least 150 watts per set, so how would I hook it up?

Ex: 2 channels off 300/4 amp

1st channel to front Xover and then from there to other front Xover,

2nd channel with the back set up the same way?

Please help, thanks in advance. :)

Yup! Pretty straight forward. Just gotta find a good place to mount the xovers.

well depending on what the RMS value of the speakers you're gonna put in there, get an amp with a RMS value that will complement the speakers well.

Ex:  2 channels off 300/4 amp

1st channel to front Xover and then from there to other front Xover,

2nd channel with the back set up the same way?

Yeah, that would work, again, assuming the RMS values match up. You hear me on that right, you don't want to overpower or underpower a speaker/component system.

Please help, thanks in advance.  :)

Thanks Kev, sounds great.

So if RMS is 120 watts and max power be 250 watts, what would you suggest the 300/4 would be perfect, but I was thinking maybe a 500/1 split by a fused distribution block, would this be doable?

Are there any adverse effects or dangers to running max pawa other than quicker speaker wear, not running them max power all the time of course?

Thanks for holding my hand in car audio 101 :P

well, the 500/1 is the same amp that I run my JL 12" off... I think it's a class D monoblock amp... could be scary to do a multi speaker dist block..

well, no, you're right, the speaker will just wear out faster... no real point in doing that... I'd reccomend Focal speakers, they can handle tons of power safely. Generally, the more power you can put in a speaker, the cleaner it will sound, with less distortion. Not neccessarly louder, but cleaner.

Thanks for holding my hand in car audio 101  :P

Ooo, good point I didn't know it was as not to be distributed.  <_<

So any suggestions on the amp then?  Thanks for the hit on the Focals, I will look into those.  Thanks again.

I'd pick out your speakers first... then find a good amp to ride shotgun in your new high fidelity ride!

Kevin, any hint on where to look for the Focals. I looked for a website but came up empty handed. Ebay seemed to be pretty informative and overpriced as well. One more question: Are you sugguesting installing the inside speaker's amplifier under the passenger seat as opposed to replacing it in the stock amplifier's location? Thanks Dogg. :)

Sidenote: The Focals I have seen have been pretty expensive, I take it this is expected?

My original thought; opinions?

I like the Focals better though, they seem like MUCH better quality and you quoted the sound as impressive. :)

Yeah, Focals are uber expensive.. but they're so good... I should have told you that earlier. :D I have a really nice local shop that sells them.... If I ever save up enough, those are what's going in the S70.l They're very comperable to Boston Acoustics.... So, I'd check those out as well. B.A makes a really kickass component setup. Iirc, the amp is located on the passenger side, under the dashboard/kickpanel...

Not sure what kind of car you have, but in my '96 850R all the speakers were 8-ohm speakers. I believe the front door and dash are wired together in parallel, and then the rear door and rear deck are wired together in parallel. This setup makes the head unit see four 4-ohm connections. I replaced my front setup completely with components so that was fine. But I also purchased a set of 4-ohm rear deck speakers, and they sounded awful with the rear door speakers hooked up because the ohm rating was wrong for how the wiring was set up.

A 4-channel will suffice to run all 8 stock speakers (LF, RF, LR, RR).

Gregg is completely right. 8 speakers really becomes 4. If you want good sound, replace your front speakers with true components, the rear doors with something decent for rear fill. Trash your rear deck speakrs, get a nice sub, and have a nice day.
