'00 Xc Stumble/misfire-No Codes?

Over the past few weeks our '00 XC has progressively developed a problem which at first seemed like a trans. issue (a single buck @ cruising speed) to what is likely an engine/fuel problem.

The car starts, idles & will cruise at speed fine, but any additional application of the throttle (hills, passing) will produce a misfire/stumble that lasts a few seconds, almost as though it's lost a cylinder, then it will smooth out (almost) as it catches up. Back to a light throttle & it's fine. The ETM has been replaced (previous owners). There are no warning lights or codes but the symptoms seem to be getting worse with time.

Any insights are greatly appreciated.

How old are the plugs? If they're not too old, i'd pull them, chech the gap, and put them back in. If the gaps are fine and they are still good, sounds like a coil pack is on its way out. When a coil pack finally goes, you will run more rough at idle, chug sputter and throw a misfire code. If you're near 100k miles it might be a good idea to replace the set of coil packs as preventive maintenance anyway.

Thanks for your reply & suggestions. I don't know about the plugs, easy enough to check though. We are currently @ 185,000+, so at this point anything can happen. We have had most of the typical issues (as found on Volvospeed), ABS module, center driveshaft bearing failure, etc. with this car but have been able to remedy them while saving $$'s at the same time, so thanks to everyone on the forums!

Anyway, I didn't realize that this car has individual coils until I just looked it up. Sounds like it could be the culprit, do you know if there is a bench test for them?

Thanks again, TD
