Questions About Installing Single Din Hu

Recommended Posts

If these topics have been answered before I apologize. I searched for the topic and read through dozens of posts with no luck.

I have a 95 850 T5R, and want to remove the stock radio and replace it with a single din pioneer cd hu.

I am NOT an audio guru so bear with me. I mainly want to replace the stock hu because I just bought this pioneer deck for another car that I sold 3 months later and also I plan on using the bottom din slot for a few goodies like tt, ebc, etc.

Anyways, is it correct that the 850 has crossovers in the front with tweeters and also an amp?

Basically I am not sure if I will lose anything or mess up anything in terms of the stock speakers/crossovers/amp if I just chance the head unit. Obviously the pioneer head unit is only designed for 4 speakers.

I usually just get one of the car specific harnesses from the store and splice all of the connections with the new deck harness. Then plug n play.

Will that work or will I have issues? In other words, will the crossovers still work the same and the balance/fading etc?

The radio is a DEH3500 (50x4 mosfet power) and dual RCA preouts for amps. I don't know if they will hook up to the stock volvo amp or not. Or if you guys recommend gettting an amp if there's not a stock one.

Are there any downsides? The stock stereo and speakers actually sounds pretty darn good and I don't want to downgrade as far as sound quality or power. But I don't want to go bu all new speakers, amps, etc as I would rather spend the cash elsewhere.

Also, I saw the post about installing a new hu where they used a "turbo pocket" for the lower din slot. What I really want there is a blank plate that I can mount the other stuff too. Does anyone know of a blank plastic radio blockoff plate that will bolt right into the stock lower din slot?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

as to your questions, I think this thread will answer most of your questions.

OK, I read through that thread and it did answer a few questions, but I still am confused...

How would I know if my stock system even has the factory amp? I looked under both seats as well as the rear storage and seat areas.

If it has a factory amp, it appears I would need something like this to retain the use of the factory amp? http://www.cardomain.com/item/PERVEN45?vq_id=none

Is something like that what everyone else on here uses, or do most people get aftermarket amps?

Also, the above adapter is only 4 channels as is my head unit. So what is going to drive the other 2 speakers?

Tell us what stock HU you have stock. I have every speaker running off amps so I might not be that helpful to ya... I'm sure someone else will chime in and help ya.

What are you plannin on putting in the lower DIN spot?

There's a foot of snow and ice sitting on my car right now but I'll go out later and look at the model.

I hate pillar gauges, so I was planning on at least putting a boost gauge in the din slot. There's room for 3 gauges in a din slot or 2 gauges and a TT or EBC.

I am also considering one of the pullout DIN touchscreen VGA LCD screens. I already own the PC version of autoenginuity (http://www.autoenginuity.com/). There's a digital dashboard that I could display boost and a bunch of other sensor outputs all on the same screen in addition to all of the datalogging, dyno, 1/4 mile and other features it has like resetting codes etc.

Of course me or my family could also watch a DVD or 2 on the same screen...

I have a dell laptop that would fit perfect in the rear storage spot by the spare tire along with a small power inverter.

The screens are $450 and the laptop is free. I figured 2 or 3 gauges are going to cost at least that much including the pods so I may as well go the screen route.

Here's a screenshot of the realtime digital gauge mode:

Nice!  Gregg just posted about the OE laptop mounting system! You should look into that! Is the realitime monitoring system work off of OBDII ?

Yes, it's realtime. There's another method of OBDII scanning called ELM which some other similar software uses. The other software also provides graphs and logging but there is a delay because of the way the software reads the data from the OBDII buffer. Autoenginuity does not use the ELM method which is why it's realtime.

What's the OE method of laptop mounting? Link to the post if you can.

Also, my goal with this is to be as stealth as possible. I plan on keeping the laptop in the car all the time (or at least so that you can remove it or install it into the trunk by just hooking up a few cables). The stealth method is why I would go with the VGA screen that folds out of the DIN slot.

They also have a Palm and PPC version of Autoenginuity if you would rather do it that way - it's smaller and more compact but I would rather have a big laptop screen than a tiny PDA screen.

Good gauges to monitor on the realtime digital dash would be rpm, boost, knock, intake air temp, and A/F at a minimum. That's just a few of the generic sensors available for the OBDII standard - there's also libraries available for specific manufacturers that adds extra/propriotary sensors like those found on GM, Toyota, Saab, etc. I'm sure they have a Volvo sensor library; then you can read any sensor on the car. Heck, you could even replace your whole gauge cluster with a touch screen (like a Stack setup) since the ECU reads all of the extra stuff like gas mileage, outside temp, etc.

OK, the model is SC-815 and says Premium Sound System. It's a combo CD and tape player.

Now, how do I check to see if I have a stock external amplifier?

I'm gonna bet you do. Can any 850 guys jump in here?

Well, I should mention that the previous owner said he removed the stock 95 cassette head unit and replaced it with this one - the SC-815 that's in there now is actually a 96 head unit.

I don't know if that helps or adds more confusion but it sure does sound like it's amplified...

Look at the back of the head unit. There is a round connection that says "AMP" or something like that. Do you have a wire connected there? If so, it goes the amp. If not, then you do not have the external amp (at least not hooked up). The amplifier location is behind the radio location and down. You should be able to look and see if it's there.

Guest ksmyarse

and if you didn't know how to get the radio out already...just push the 2 little bars on the bottom sides in until they pop out and use em as handles to pull the radio out

It was too easy to remove the stereo if you ask me....
