Turbo Rebuild Options

Background: Overheated my car, swapped a motor, using original turbo from overheat. (There was coolant/oil/crap in the turbo that spilled when I pulled the motor) [refer to here for humorous reading: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/139046-engine-swap-woes/]

Problem: Car smokes after 20 seconds of idle and I'm thinking its turbo related although the wheel has NO play and spins freely. I haven't let it run longer than 5 minutes since start up although idle is fine, not lumpy at all.

Idea: I have a 16T wheel and housing that I bought a little while ago that is just sitting there. $55 bucks for a rebuild kit from eBay. Since I'm going from a (flatback) 15G to a (superback) 16T, Do I need to buy the 16T rebuild kit? (that's what logic tells me)

Another question: When I rebuild it... where should I send my CHRA to be rebalanced? Some place local to here says they will balance them "statically" (separately then reassemble instead of CHRA as one piece) for $45.)

One last out: Is the turbo fine and I just need to let it "burn off"? And if I do, what do I risk?

before you jump to the turbo being bad... how is the motor's compression?

and are we talking about oil smoke here? coolant?

when you say it idles for 20 sec and then smokes, do you mean you can drive the car without it smoking, but stopping at a light for 20 seconds and it starts smoking? or it starts smoking 20 seconds after startup and will not go away?

Junkyard engine with warranty. I haven't checked the compression as I haven't even let the engine get to fully warm. I have not even attempted to put the car in gear. It was dark, so I'm not 100%, but I feel that the smoke dissipated like oil smoke. I can't be sure until I see it in daylight.. but the smoke did not smell any sweeter than normal exhaust.

Here's an excerpt from another site that expresses what I'm leaning towards:

"...When the blue smoke is noticeable on the car with turbo charger, the possibility is that the turbo charger seal is leaking. Sometimes, turbo charger seals leak and this can cause the oil to get into the exhaust system which is hot and then it gets burned. The burned oil will create smoke and funneled through exhaust pipe and comes out the tailpipe."

These turbos are pretty much bullet proof.

So did you do the PCV while the motor was out? Have you just sit and let it run? Since junk is probably built up on the inside and outside of the exhaust.

PCV was just lightly cleaned... it looked ok. Besides, I have an oil catch can inline before the PTC, so that crap would have been caught.

The more I read and think (especially with your "bullet proof" description), I am feeling that I just need to start it and let it run for a while before I go jumping to any conclusions. Stay tuned!

ever tried to shine a light at the smoke that's coming out? (since you said you never had a chance to look at it in the daylight) and with noticeable amount of smoke, you should be able to smell what it is like. i'm pretty sure you would know the different smell between gasoline, burnt oil, and burnt anti-freeze/water.

my guess is that you haven't ran it long enough (if it's gas smell), or the valve stem seal has actually dried up to a point where it would not seal properly. coolant is unlikely unless if there is a crack head or bad head gasket (this usually happen from overheating, so if anything, these would have been the problem with your hold motor) does the coolant reservoir bottle bubble continuously when it runs?

turbo seal are 95% of the time very good on these turbo. the motor would overheat long before you could overheat the turbo under normal driving.

cheers!
