What To Replace With Great Factory System?

So I'm in love with the factory system. I've got to give it to Volvo...out of every car I've owned they bar far make the best factory audio system. My Mustang GT with the Mach system took second. Anyway, my door speakers tend to crackle a bit so I think I may replace them. What wattage speaker can I run there via the factory setup? I think I remember from when I used to be into this stuff that because of wattage demands, most speakers couldn't be utilized properly via the factory setup.

I am not interested in getting amps and spending all kinds of money on the stereo. All I want is to just fix what is broken. So what is the best route ....aftermarket or find a factory replacement from somewhere like a junkyard?

If I did go aftermarket it seems the general consensus is that in a 98 S70 T5 the speaker size is 7". So I'm assuming I should be getting a 6 1/2" speaker? What brand speakers are comparable to the factory setup?

How can I find out if I have a factory amp? The car has the Head unit with the Cd/tape/cd changer option. I think it has 6 speakers but may have 8. It definitely has two in the dash, two in the door, and two in the rear. It has amazing bass response for a factory system...especially for back in the late 90's!

You should have 8 speakers. It is a pretty nice sound system, a stock amplifier really wakes it up!

Pull out your head unit, there's a DIN plug in the back labeled AMP or something, see if anything's plugged into there. If you do have one it should be under your passenger seat.

Haha, older cars rattle in some crazy places.

I'm learning this now ;)

Pm me a price and are they a direct plug and play or do I need to alter all types of wires?

The stock amplifiers are direct plug and play. Check out the other thread in this sub forum, I described how it mounts. :)

And if you don't have an SC-901 unit you'll want to get one of those. They need an external amp to power them but the sound quality is way way above the SC-816 unit. The 901 is made by Alpine as are the amps (4x50 SE or R amp, 4 x60 and 4x 100 both from the C70).

Do all the factory amps work with all the factory head units?

Just saw the other thread, guess the C70 amp takes some work. Does the amp out of the SE direct plug into an 850?

It should, although there is a 4 x 50 watt amp made by Alpine for the 850 series that goes in a different location than the 4 x 50 amp for the 70 series. In the 70 series, there was a Dolby Processor option which sat in front of the heater core in the same location that the 850R amp would sit (which is the amp described above in this thread) held in place by a bracket. In order to still have an amp for the 70 series, they re-located it under the passenger seat where there are 2 pre-drilled screw holes and the amp has its bracket built in. Functionally they are the same except that Volvo no longer stocks or makes the wiring harness that goes from the amp to the headunit so they are very expensive and hard to find used...ask me how I know :P I'm still searching for one since I installed the only one I had on the XC in Sweden.

Anyway, I'm not sure the 850 has those pre-drilled holes under the seat so you would definitely want to stick with the 850R amp but it should plug into the back of the 8xx unit.

If you have an 850 there's no reason to get the 70 series amp. You're never going to install the Dolby processor so use that space for the 850R amp - I've used it for the last 6 years in my wagon and it's great. I am finally getting around to installing the Dolby unit though so now I have to switch amps.
