Hawk Brake Pads And Sp Slotted Rotor Upgrade

I wasn't happy with my first choice of ATE pads with my old power slot rotors.

The rotors had plenty of meat left on them but even scratching them up to accommodate the ATE pads, they didn't have enough cold bite.

Besides the dust was just like stock. A weeks worth of driving was enough to give it a washing.

I wanted to get some better pads, my choices where Hawk, Akebono, Porterfield and EBC.

After many nights of decisions and searching for reviews I decided to go with the Hawk HPS fitted to SP slotted rotors.

I found my deal at the Top Brakes site, a company based in upstate NY.

Even though I had to pay tax, shipping was super fast, and I liked their guaranteed fitment policy. I got everything in 2 days.

The SP rotors, I have never heard of before so I called Top Brakes. I actually talked with a person who knew about brakes

and they assured me that SP was a good company and provided a better performance rotor than some "other" aftermarket manufactures.

These Rotors came packaged in a special plastic container, I was impressed how nice they came and not all banged up.

I chose the SP Performance Slotted Brake Rotors With Standard Gray ZRC Finish with the Hawk HPS pads.

I'm glad I did, Break in was a breeze and after 500 miles, my cold initial bite is great, I have no fade from multiple highway stops (I don't race) and they are quiet! The Taconic Parkway in NY defiantly made me test them out. Most of all after a weeks worth of driving I can't tell if I have any dust. Just perfect. The ZRC cold galvanizing compound really adds to the sharp look and the anti rust when it rains.

I'm happy camper.

I don't know what blanks SP performance uses but they are made in Germany.

How much of a stopping power increase did you see with these?

It's hard to say how many feet are reduced as breaking power is measured in.

But comparing stock pads mated with Power Slot rotors as my base line previously I have to say I gained 20% overall.

That's including the power to stop over a wide temperature range, including wet weather.

The noticeable difference is the cold bite. Which I was looking for.

The cold bite is the same as if I was stopping after heating the rotors up a bit.

This includes driving on the highway for 40 minutes in 40 degree wet rainy weather

and then receiving a break check at 70MPH and feeling firm gripping feed back through the pedal.

I see that the slots in these rotors are slotted larger than most after market slots.

I think that has a lot to do with the enhanced wet weather wiping and grabbing capability.

Including gas evacuation under heavy breaking.

I have good thoughts for those freezing rainy days that tend to ice up breaks when not touched for a bit.

A panic stop will warrant firm engagement of the ABS quickly and not haphazardly. ABS activation is near-instantaneous (bites quickly)

They have a firmer overall pedal feel and grabs more within the linear progression of the petal force. (most breaks do but)

Meaning if I break from 40MPH applying liberal force to slow down and jerk the pedal slightly the responsiveness is clean cut and not reserved as with what stock gave me.
