850T5M
Ever since I redid my clutch, I've been getting this weird sound when I start the car. It only happens when its cold outside, and the usually only the first start in the morning. I didnt notice it this summer much (maybe a couple of times), but now that its getting cold, it does it every morning. Basically its a grinding/scratching noise that comes from the tranny area. If i push in the clutch, the noise stops. The clutch was installed 4 months ago with a new TO bearing and everything... Once the car is warm, it stops making the noise http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/8441/h8p.mp4 Any ideas? Clutch is FCP Crap Sachs replacement (non R, the normal T5 clutch) Oil is Lucas Synthetic 75W90 or something :S I had filled the tranny up to the drain hole, closed it and never checked it again...are manual tranny's the same as automatic, where I have to add more oil once I drive it a little...could I just be missing oil? :S
Oreo931
Input shaft bearing is bad. It is NOT your throwout bearing. See my thread: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/139137-m56h-input-shaft-bearing-replacable/ Don't let anyone try to convince you it's the throwout bearing, because it's not. I did a TON of research on this and I'm positive it's the input shaft bearing. Mine has been making noise for a while now. It comes and goes. I haven't noticed any negative effects so far, but eventually the transmission will break. I sourced another low mileage transmission, which I'll eventually put in. After that's in I'm going to replace all of the bearings in my current transmission. Edit: it could also theoretically be clutch chatter, or incorrectly torqued/loose pressure plate bolts. But assuming everything was installed correctly, it's most likely your input shaft bearing.
850T5M
Why would it change with temperature tho? lol
850T5M
Thing is, the noise only started after I changed my clutch. Also, I didn't really notice this (my first manual car) but my friend (bmw mechanic) said that my clutch isnt smooth, it jitters and shakes if i try to let it off at a low rpm. For example, car is idling and i lift the clutch pedal, instead of being a smooth feel, it shakes...could something be installed crooked or maybe the screws weren't torqued well? 850 Stylzz
Interesting. My trannys always make contented noises. I think you are doing it wrong.

BMW's have something called a CDV (clutch delay valve) that make engaging the clutch smoother. Every manual 850/x70 I've driven shakes when you engage the clutch at low RPM. Account_Deleted_T5M
I have that same sound in my t5m, but its not my bearings its clutch chatter, but i'm not running an OEM clutch or Pressure Plate
850T5M
So, what does clutch chatter sound like? Does it make a similar noise? Im asking because I believe my friend (who redid my clutch this summer) didnt locktite the bolts on the flywheel. Could they be getting loose and making the chatter noise? Clutch chatter is only when clutch is in the UP position, if you depress the clutch even a 1/4 inch it should go away. You should ALWAYS ALWAYS loctite the bolts on the flywheel, with it spinning at 6500rpms you do NOT want it flying through your hood or more importantly through the firewall into your leg, happened on my buddies SRT-4 at 7k rpms. Clutch chatter is a function of either bad mounts, failing Pressure plate, or using an unsprung clutch ( as in my case )

When I start it on a cold morning, it makes the noise. As soon I push in the clutch the noise stops. It then starts again when I let go of the pedal (engage clutch). Anyone know if this is really urgent, or if it can wait the winter?
Account_Deleted_T5M
You should be fine throughout the winter, stock clutch shouldn't chatter at all, something doesn't seem to be seated properly, whether it be clutch misalignment, or when torquing down the PP it wasn't torqued down correctly

Im using Lucas Synthetic MTL, i think its 75W90. I filled it to the overfill hole and closed it up. Never rechecked it. Does it go down when you start driving the car (like an auto tranny)? Account_Deleted_T5M
Shouldn't be low, as long as you filled it up to the line. That wouldn't cause clutch chatter though

Unless the sound becomes really loud and very persistent, I wouldn't worry about it. I bought a spare transmission just in case, but until I get the free time to rebuild my current transmission, I'm not going to touch it. From what I read online, it seems that the bearings take a very long time to cause any problems besides noise. I honestly don't think twice about mine and I drive the car how I would otherwise. I don't hesitate to push the car either. Also, I doubt your flywheel was put on incorrectly, otherwise I predict you'd be experiencing more than just noise...Like a lot of vibration, or something like that. It would be something you could probably feel in addition to hearing it.
Account_Deleted_T5M
I'll trade you your complete transmission for new gears and syncros, basically the guts of the transmission. + of course a little cash, no sense in wasting a whole transmission
