2000 V70Xc Driveshaft

I have a 2000 v70xc I am fixing up to sell and my mechanic looked it over. He said that the front cv joint on the driveshaft to the rear is starting to hum and make slight noises since it is getting cooked by the cat. Is the drive shaft one pieceor is there a front and rear driveshaft? I see many references to the rear driveshaft and am wondering if I can just buy that and be done with it. I would go out and look at it on the car but am recovering from knee surgery, can't get under car, enjoying my pain meds ;) Thanks.

The front u-joint can be replaced. There is a Volvo repair kit. I don't have the part number off the top of my head but I believe it retails for about 200 dollars at the dealer. You can also buy a rebuilt driveshaft from Colorado Driveshaft for 450. They are one of the few shops that offers rebuilt prop shafts for our AWD cars. The prop shaft from Volvo runs about 650-800 dollars.

Would it be easier to just replace the whole drive shaft? Doing as much work as I can by myself and have already done front struts and bushings, front rotors. Had to have the mechanic to the tie rod end, boot and axle as I don't have any impact tools.

Thanks!

As long as the screws that hold the prop shaft in place aren't seized or some jerk used air tools to tighten them then it's merely unscrewing 12 screws (6 on each end) to replace the prop shaft.

I've never replaced just the u-joint, but I don't think it would be very hard to do that either. As long as the rest of the shaft is truly in good shape then you can feel comfortable selling the car with a new u-joint rather than entirely new/rebuilt shaft.

Good point - I think I will just put a rebuilt or new one on - less hassle to install rather than fix one and piece of mind for me and the lucky new owner - someone buy this xc 2000 v70xc!

Thanks guys!
