Battery Help

Ok soo... Back in august I had a bad alternator which had drained a brand new battery. The battery sat in my basement up until yesterday because with me being at school

I didn't have time to replace the alternator. Replaced the alternator last night, charged the 4 month old drained battery at pep boys, started the car this morning.

It started up just fine. Then I had to give my brothers truck a jump. Connected the cables and when I went to start my car the battery died on me. Is the battery

bad because I left it sitting uncharged for that long? The answer is probably an obvious yes but I just wanted to make sure there aren't other electrical problems with my car.

Thanks guys.

Yes!

You can try to make the battery alive by charging it for about 48 hours with a very low amp of current.

For example...

If you have a battery with 70ah,you charge it for about 10-12 hours with 7 amps of current. That's for normal charging when battery is dead for a few days.

In your case, because the battery sat too long you can try to recharge/refresh it within 24-48 hours with a 2-3 amps of current.

This can ONLY refresh a little your old battery...in other words...you can only buy some time like this untill you buy a new battery.

If this doesn't help, you'll need to replace the battery.

The lesson here is never leave a battery discharged for any length of time.

The battery is sulfated due to being left without a charge. If you havnt shorted a cell then you can desulfate the battery. Look on eBay and pick one up for 25 bucks. Hook it up with the shortest leads possible!! If you can keep the car starting and working while the unit works you should be able to bring it back without issue.

You can also hook it up to a trickle charger with the desulfator attached which would be the best. BUT if you don't have another battery then your best bet is to run the unit while using the battery in your car.

It will recover over time, if you need any more details let me know.
