Vagabond
1994 850 Wagon NA Auto FWD. Please read before generically commenting. There is a dragging, scraping noise, loud and consistent coming from the drive-train heard through firewall. My concern is the torque converter or some type of bearing inside the trans. When i reach speeds above 5-10 mph the noise increases in frequency and a bit in volume. When I put the car in neutral at highway speeds the noise persist. When car is in neutral at a stop the is no noise or vibration. Engine revs smoothly and accelerates normally. Put the car on jack stands took off the wheels and did the same test as the highway. When car is in drive the noise persist. Front suspension worn and have their own unique noises. The Calipers are not dragging. The Hubs are not noisy nor does the sound lessen in one direction or another. the axles themselves appear fine and dont seem out of balance The noise comes from the bell housing The bolts to the flywheel/torque converter are tight. Replaced the transmission 6 months or so ago. Replaced DS CV at same time. New pads and rotors Mounts in decent shape Sway bar and bushings in decent shape. Does the torque converter make noise on its way out or us it ust slip. Is this a bearing issue. Help much appreciated.I really need to pointed in the right direction. I use this car for work and do 2000 miles a month. \
Cal3thousand
I want to lean towards chassis more than drivetrain with the differences in idle neutral and cruising neutral.

Vagabond
Added about a thousand miles or more to the car (Odometer gear broken) Since I posted. I had bought a hub bearing since mine was getting noisy. After so much mileage in a short period of time the the hub bearing really started to fail. Previously when I had it on stands in drive the was not enough load to identify the hub as the sole issue (on top of the worn out suspension). However, the vibrations from friction do to the failed bearings, transmitted down the axle into the bell housing. That caused the confusion as to the source of the noise. Replaced the hub bearing and no more transmission noise. Hopes this helps those with similar questions. Finally failed.
Oreo931
Replaced the hub bearing and no more transmission noise. Hopes this helps those with similar questions. Finally failed. Glad you got it fixed. I was going to suggest hub bearing. FWIW, I've never heard of a torque converter going bad in these transmissions.

FWIW, I've never heard of a torque converter going bad in these transmissions. +1 to that, as they are extremely simple units. The dead give away on this one is that the noise should totally stop once in lock-up.
Vagabond
I knew the hub was bad, I just hoped there wasn't an issue in the tranny. Since the noise was road speed dependent I doubted it was the TC, but thought it safer to get opinions considering the crazy mileage I put on the car weekly. I was hoping to do hubs with the suspension swap but it's all good. Car runs so much smother and quieter. Thanks for the help guys. Check my showroom thread for the upcoming suspension project.
