Boost3237
Google Maps Navigation is amazing, but I also have standalone GPS installed on the phone just in case there is no data in the middle of no where and I'm lost (and my car's navi isn't working for some reason). Always nice to have a failover. Google maps doesn't use just data. It uses GPS, if you turn off data/3g you can still link up with satellites. It uses data and then GPS to plant your position. If you are out of data range then having the standalone GPS software then you can still use GPS. Like i have Navigon on my iPhone 4 since i don't get good data around my area.... +1 for iPad, I just picked one up at TJ Maxx for $360 and then jailbroke it with 4.2.1, love it! Google Maps uses a lot of data. Try turning of your cell phone data and using Google Maps with just GPS, sure it'll tell you with coordinates where you are, but no maps, no navigation information, nada.
