Idling Fluctuation Of 300-400 Rpm

Over the past couple weeks my car has begun to idle very inconsistently. It constantly fluctuates up and down between 600 to 1000 RPMS.It is not in any particular rythym or pattern, just lumpy and annoying as hell.I was thinking TPS or MAF,but don't know much about either on this car.Ideas anyone?

I did get my aftermarket warranty straightened out finally,so all is good with that.I would assume whatever is going bad should be covered.By the way,,not to sound like a dumbass, but I took pictures of my car finally, but how the hell do you post them on VS.I've tried what little computer technique I have in my bag of tricks,to no avail.

Rob, the MT+99 year 70 series car have what's called "drive by wire" which means that a computer controls the throttle, not like the normal mechanical way that you and I are used to. The ETS, or electronic throttle sensor is very prone to failure, and this is more than likely what is causing the fluctuations in the idling of your car. Many of our fellow VS brothers have gone though this, and would probably be able to give you more advice on what the probable solutions are to your problem....

as far as the posting equasion, go to the "show room" forum, and stickied in that forum is a very nice thread by Legened (mod of that forum) on how to post pictures. Check out photodump that's a popular site that hosts pictures. :)

Thanks Kevin.I'll keep my eye on it.Going to try and talk to Rich/Bay 13 about this.See what he says.Hopefully if it is the ETS,it is covered under my warranty.

Merry Christmas bro!

Thanks Rich!I have to go to the Volvo dealer tomorrow anyway, and my aftermarket warranty is good there,so I will ask them to look at it or set me up with an appointment.

The two major items that cause your symptoms is the Electronic throttle body, and the Mass air flow meter. More than likely the ETM electronic throttle module/body. Take it to a place that will use your extended warranty and have it checked out.

Good evening Bay 13,

I have been talking via e-mail with Kathleen on Volvoxc.com and by e-mail..

It looks like she has a verified Bosch ETM in a 2001. The 10digit of the VIN is '1', a picture of the ETM shows Bosch and when I put the Bosch and Volvo part numbers into Google I get pages from Russia with the Volvo Logo. She is sending me the complete VIN so we can see what the engine is and where it was built.

Have you heard of such a thing?

The TV report made the Detriot TV in text and web cast.

I've never heard of a Bosh ETM in a 2001. A truly weird find. If in fact it's a Bosh Volvo would be the only ones that could explain it. Is the car from overseas? Or is this a state side (North America) car? Does it look like the italian version, or the 2002 Bosh units?
