firefly
My 1990 S70 started losing coolant during the summer. I figured ok, weather related. Then, I noticed the carpet on the driver's side was wet. Figured my son spilled something and forgot to clean it. With teenagers that does happen. After doing some research, I have come to the conclusion that the heater core has been leaking and the coolant has been seeping through the carpet. Now that I've figured it out (w/o the help of my mechanic husband), I checked the antifreeze level and of course, it needs antifreeze. so I pumped out the water (yes, I'd kept a jug of water in the trunk and started filling it up with water - so there! I do what I can.) and put in coolant/antifreeze; however, there is a white round piece that has popped to the top of the coolant tank so now the coolant light will not go off. I forgot to add that when I took my car in to have the oil changed, the guy there (not my mechanic husband, mind you) told me it looks like I have an oil leak coming from my turbo. So now I need to look for a turbo. Oh, also I am jobless as of Nov.30. Such is life. Just need some clear guidance on how to fix these problems. I like my S70, it only has 120,000 miles and I need to keep it a couple more years.I need to know the following: 1. how to replace the heater core and 2. what is the white round piece in the coolant tank and how do I fix it? 3. help with turbo replacement - what do I get, where do I get it and how is it installed? Thanks!

TxS70
1.Heater core http://www.volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/9717-pics-of-heater-core-install/ Its not too hard, but you have to make sure you don't break anything else in there like the PITA black plastic coupler in the firewall. Took me maybe an hour. 2. Maybe the plastic thing is the sensor for the coolant level? I'm not too sure what else is in there. That would explain the light not going off. Easy fix http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/product_id/2139/nm/Volvo_S70_Turbo_Coolant_Level_Sensor_1999_2000_Aftermarket_/category_id/88 3. You probably don't need a turbo unless you run out of oil. The lines leak a lot on these cars. Its "normal" Exactly how much oil are you leaking? (someone with a turbo can chime in at any time If I'm wrong here) Here is a link to a list of the common repairs for your car. The 850 and s70 are VERY similar. So if you see something that you need for the 850, its most likely will apply to your car. Only the trim and a few small mechanical things are different. http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/8739-volvospeed-useful-threads-for-repairs/
Ali
Heater core is easy to replace and fairly common on these cars. It 2should be simple for your husband to fix that. As far as the turbo is concerned, it is normal for a little bit of oil to be present around it. Unless you have a large puddle of oil under your car, or it is smoking like crazy, I wouldn't worry about it as long as you keep checking the oil regularly. Turbo cars from what I understand burn oil which is normal. If the coolant expansion tank is full, then the coolant light should not be on unless the white round thing is causing so,me issues. Sound like the white this is the piece that sits under the coolant bottle cap?? There shouldn't be anything floating the coolant tank.
firefly
thank you all for helping me with this. I do like my car. It does great in the snow and it's comfortable. From what I've read, it shouldn't take long to complete the repairs. Merry Christmas.
firefly
Replaced the heater core, new couplings and new o-rings; however, it still is leaking from where the metal pipes connect against the heater core. when it's tightened, the leaks even more. Any suggestions?
--Aaron--
Did you use Genuine Volvo O Rings or the ones included in the OEM kit? You did use an OEM heater core, correct?
caanglin
Check to make sure you got all the old o-rings out. When I did mine there were little pieces of the old o-rings stuck in it from where they broke apart over the years.

firefly
Well....we replaced with heater core, the o-rings (had to use different O-rings) and the two hoses. My mechanic husband said it was the easiest one he's ever replaced. However....we still have a leak. Does anyone have an ideas?
