2001 C70 With A Window Problem,

HI EVERYBODY!!

2 weeks ago I just got a new (to me) 2001 C70 Convertible 2.3. I bought it with 67000 miles on it. It has been a fun car to drive, but I'm not off to a great start. Just this morning my passenger side window would not go down. I tried using the button the driver side, i tried the one on the passenger side, i tried the "all 4 windows" down button, the convertible button... NONE of them would move the passenger side window. The fuse is fine. What shoudl be my next step?

Other than that, I've gotten 23.6 mpg with 75% highway driving. does this sound right?

have somebody listen for the window motor in the passenger door while you press any/all of the buttons. If all of the other windows work, and you can't hear anything you either need a new window regulator for the passenger window, or a new master switch(not sure if volvo is the same, but several other cars its been the problem)

23.6 mpg sounds about right for the amount of highway driving.

have a multimeter?

could be a bad passenger side switch... the wiring may pass though that switch even when using the master; that's how it is on my 240 (if I remove the passenger switch, the master will do nothing)...

23.6 sounds good.

here's some all-highway:

Thanks, for the info. You go >500 miles to a tank, wow.

I really hope it's not the window regulator, because I heard that it is $2000 to fix. I'd sell it way before I paid that kind of coin to fix a window. Unfortunately I don't have a multimeter, but I may need to pick one up.

If I understand correctly - the master switch (the one of the driver side) may be bad, the passenger side switch may be bad in isolation because the master switch works through the passenger side switch, or the dreaded regulator may be broken.

Do i have that right?

Just went through this with my wife's 2000 C70 convertible: The driver's window just stopped working completely. Unlike all other 70-series cars, the master-switch on the convertible is NOT the master, but rather there is a module under the dash which allows the roof-up/down mechanism to control the windows, and THAT is the master. So, you can have a dead window without it being the master-switch. In my case, it was actually a loose connection to the motor itself.

if the driver side switch was bad, the passenger side could still work

but if the passenger switch was bad, neither driver or passenger switch would work.... at least that's my theory.

the window is kind of a bitch with these... the regulator is a pair of cables built into the frame (and not sold separately), so that costs about $600. I wouldn't worry about that unless you hear window motor running and nothing happens.

switch is obviously the easiest and cheapest to replace... next is the motor, and while you can get one cheap, if you're paying some one to replace it, there's a good amount to do.

Power runs through the drivers switch...if your drivers side switch is gummed up both switches for that one window will NOT work. Take out your master (drivers side) switch.....take it apart and clean all brass contacts under the buttons, I usually use a little sand paper to scuff off the corrosion. Should work fine I've had a few of my windows stop working over the years and this was the fix EVERY time!

  • 1 month later...

Since this seems to be another common failure point, I have (yet another) stupid question. I know a lot of the components of these cars shares interchangeability with the S70/V70 and even old 850's - were any of those equipped with manual (EG - "crank") windows? That is, has anyone ever done a retrofit for a C70 to crank windows?

I am all for deleting "failure points" on these cars. I have already removed my turbo, and would gladly delete my sunroof and Electronic Throttle thingy if I could (both working fine now but will undoubtedly screw me at the worst possible time).

Stop thread hijacking before I delete you.

Fine, if your real concern is "thread hijacking" from a question of fixing broken electric windows to a modification of the window mechanism (which you and I both know it isn't) - please delete my post and I will put a new thread with the question.
