850T5M
I found a car on Kijiji for a great price. The guy said he changed the timing belt 2 weeks ago (has 210000km). A few days ago he was driving it on the highway and it "just shut off". Now he said it wont spark. Any ideas what might be wrong? I haven't seen the car yet, but its 40 minutes away from home. Im wondering if its even worth it to go see the car, or if its the timing belt that jumped. Cars a 96 850 Turbo, automatic. Thanks!

You can move a few degrees and it would still turn on. How are you checking spark? You can take the wire from the coil and see if there is any juice from that. If there's not, its more then likely the CPS. tap it with a screwdriver or something, see if it comes back to life. i doubt the timing belt, since, if hes sitting there cranking it, youd be hearing some nice CRUNCHS
850T5M
Like I said, I havent seen the car or heard it. What the seller told me is that there is no spark from the plugs. Whats the CPS? Could it have anything to do with the ECU or Coil? NVM, Crank Position Sensor right? Where is it located? Is there a way to test it? Ah, well Assuming the guy isn't lieing to you, and its actually a spark problem, that wouldn't be the timing belt. Could very well be the coil or ECU. I was going for the cam sensor, its kinda in the area by the upper engine stabilizer mount. (Atleast i'm pretty sure that's the CPS) It could be the crank sensor too. If there is spark at the coil however, then your good and the ignition parts are probably just ancient :)
850T5M
How can I test either sensor lol? Can you put a voltmeter/resistance meter or something on them?
Bah
How can I test either sensor lol? Can you put a voltmeter/resistance meter or something on them? I can't find the ranges off hand, there hidden somewhere in the service manual.. The way that i hear of ppl testing them as of late, has been to swap a known good one in, or hit it no joke, apparently you can hit it (gently) with the butt of a hammer and you'll see some life? LOL, good luck telling the owner to do that though my money is on the cam sensor though, assuming the current owner has some sense and knows how to check spark I'll keep looking to find the 'technical' way to test it. I think the crank sensor you can put a VMM to, and upon cranking should be 0.1V - 0.5V but i could be wrong on that. Someone will hopefully chime in with the proper ranges. laird
Cam sensor failures are fairly common. Get one from the JY and go from there.
Fudge_Brownie
Cam sensor failures are fairly common. Get one from the JY and go from there. After cranking the car for a little bit (~20 seconds?) it should set a CEL for a dead cam sensor. Be sure to check your codes.
Guest Ben from Sin Cal
i have a 95 volvo 850 glt. i have spun a timing belt about 3 weeks ago and bent all 10 exhaust valves. i did a head gasket and sent head in for complete valve job
Guest Ben from Sin Cal
like i said complete valve job. while engine was apart i pressure washed engine bay. after i put car back togither it was a little hard to start when cold. but ran good. efter about 3 days of driving the shift arrow on dash was flashing. after i turned car off it would not restart. No spark. replaced coil and module, main relay, cam sensor, crank sensor, and tps. Still no spark. replaced ecm and car started. About a week ago shift arrop on dash lit up again and when i got home and shut car off it wouldnt start again. No spark. was told by another forum it could be PNP switch. Put new PNP switch on and still nothing. Im stumped. Anybody know anything else?
