I owned many VWs in high school back in the 80s.(first car was an 81 rabbit and had a string of Sciroccos both A1 and A2 and a 16v dog of a jetta I bought in the early 90s) A1s at least had a weight advantage and were cheap to fix. 16v's make no power under 3000 rpms and then they make a little bit after that. the Jetta is heavy and you will find, rather cheaply built...but at least theres a huge aftermarket where you can toss a ton of $$ at it to wind up with a car almost as fast and not nearly as nice to drive as an 850/ x70..Although, Sconeman owned one hell of a Callaway A1 Turbo Scirocco back in 1991 That was a SICK VW..when it ran..
