2001+ Model Year V70 Transmission Problems

My wife's kid hauler (2001 V70 2.4t) is in the dealership for a transmission problem. Car has 115k on the clock. Current transmission was replaced at 95k. Dealership hasn't had a chance to take a look at it yet but I'm starting to get the feeling I need to get rid of this thing. I can't afford to keep putting transmissions in it. Except for the reliability issue with this car, we love it. Did Volvo finally fix the transmission issues in later model years? If so with what model year. I'd be interested in maybe a 2006+ V70 or XC70 if they're more reliable like my 99 S70 T5.

Thanks, Doug

You mention it's been 20k since replacement, what length of time are we talking about?

To answer you question, 03+ models have significantly lower failure rates. Bad design in the 01-02 years. Current rebuilds from Volvo are the the best available.

It's been a little over two years since the transmission was replaced with a rebuilt unit from AAMCO.

I was leaning towards a 2006+ XC70 since we get a decent bit of snow here and tend to do winter road trips. Are these years with the AWD solid?

This is your problem. Volvo remans are the only way to go.

Yeah in hindsight I probably should have gone there but at $5k+ it seemed pretty steep at the time. At this point I'm not sure the car's even worth it anymore. I'm hoping it's not the tranny and just a fluid or electrical issue but I not feeling lucky!

Are the 2006+ years as reliable as my S70?

i have a volvo reman in my xc90 and its going fine...you want to talk about POS reliability problem cars...my xc90 is not as bad as a awd s80 99-01/02 but its up there. lucky for me i got it cheap and it was maintained.

you still never posted on what problems you are having.

since its just a 01 v70 fwd car, sell it as is for $1-2k add in the five grand you would have spent for a new trans and you have $7k for a newer car. the broken car is just going to cost more and more money as it sits at the dealership.

The problem is that while driving at or around 50 mph, the transmission would start slipping. you could rev the engine and nothing happened. We stopped and dropped it into low and was able to get off the road but it would not go into reverse. There were no CEL or warning messages. Once we turned off the engine for a few minutes and restarted, a warning message of "Transmission Service Required (or might have been Needed)" appeared but the car seemed to work in all gears. We had it towed to the dealership just to be safe.

That's what I'm thinking if it's the tranny again.

No need for TCU replacement and it wouldn't work anyways. 03+ trannies will not work, I have personally tried.

Well that Bites! :-(

What if you do a engine/tranny combo swap with the 03+ ECU?

Arrgh! Just got the call. The tranny is DOA. It's tripping a lockup function error as well as making strange whirring sounds from the torque converter. Since the rebuilt transmission is out of warranty, AAMCO will replace it with another one for free labor but $2200 for the new rebuild. At this point do I put more money in it or sell it as is (I'm not even sure what it's worth with a bad transmission. I guess I'll close this thread down and open a new on asking for opinions on what to buy next. We need 6+ passenger capabilities but I've heard bad things about the XC90s.

Control modules(ECM and TCM) are coded to the vehicle and cannot be transferred or re-programmed from another vehicle.

Please search on this site before making a new thread about looking for an XC90, that info is well documented

here.

Sight correction, that's actually a bad design since '00, all '00R have them. And Volvo isn't the only source for rebuilt AW55 anymore. There are several companies that can rebuilt them, AAMCO not being one of them... The AW55 has been used in lots of cars, like Nissan, GM, Ford... So lots of companies have experience rebuilding them now. Back in the day no one but Volvo could do it...
