I think you are OK if you stay away from T6 models. Models with the five cylinder,

V8 (if V8 you want 2006 or later) or newer 3.2 should do well. Used prices are

pretty good (if you are buying). Probably due to the ruined reputations from the T6s.

03+ XC90 2.5L and you are golden! That's my next buy if I ever buy a car that doesnt need work

As for the tranny. This would be kinda rare but possible from AAMCO, they might have put DEXIII ATF instead of Type-4 ATF in. Since the T4 fluid is particular to how it reacts to TC lock-up. I means it's a shot in the dark but changing it out for a known T4 ATF is worth a shot. (not by the dealer unless you have money to waste)

In my opinion it's not the actual gears, clutch packs or TCs that are a poor design that cause failure. It's the valve body and the ECM that can't control the tranny properly. So keeping that in mind, I bet you anything that AAMCO rebuilt the tranny internally but never rebuilt the valve body. And even if they did the poor design would have still been an issue.

Thanks for the feedback! :-)

As for the tranny, it's been in the car for two years with no problems so I'm pretty sure the fluid is the correct type. I made sure at the time it was replaced that they knew to put in the correct type. We just finished a 4k mile road trip back and forth between Ohio and Florida without any issues. The car is now over at AAMCO so they can check it.

If it is the tranny, I'm tempted to replace it with a used one (since AAMCO will do with work without charge, just parts). That way I can sell it as a working vehicle. Unfortunately right before the Florida trip, I had the timing belt and water belt replaced along with a new set of tires to the tune of about $1500. I'd like to at least get that money back. When I sell it, I will fully disclose the fact that it has a used transmission so I'm not trying to pawn my problems off on someone.

If I could get $2k for it without the repair (with buyer knowing it has a bad transmission), I'd do that first.

You wouldnt get 2K for it unless it was to someone that didnt know about the 01-02 Volvos. A more realist price in my opinion would be 1K for someone to part out or swap to a 5spd if they had a doner.

Also finding a used tranny for this is risky and not easy to come by. The shop I used to work at has an 01 XC that has been sitting around for over 2 years waiting for a low mileage tranny. I don't even think Erie has them in stock from what I last heard.

idono what to tell ya as these vehicles are a real bugger to deal with when it comes to the tranny.

We need 6+ passenger capabilities but I've heard bad things about the XC90s.

all true, but not many will say all the great things about them

T6 are trans issues, since it is a volvo it is expecedto last 100000000 miles, if it was a ford explorer 100,000 it is expected to die. so take it how ever you want it. t6 is a lemon or just the a volvo with average life expectancy for the transmission. either way it sucks donkey nuts if it goes.

problems off on someone.

2k might be a stretch but craigslist it now and see what you get, after all it is free to list it.

You my friend will be going thru the natural cycle of volvo life. like the from caveman to modern man thing. old amazon volvo to modern family volvo LOL. as our families grow we need bigger cars. the xc90 is a great choice, safety #1. what ever version you choose 2.5, t6, 3.2, or v8 you will have some sort of problem, you will have weird clunks and groans, you will have AWD failures, you will have headlamps going foggy, you will have tailgate problems, you will have brake hissing from the brake booster, you will have angle gear sleeve issues, you will have sunroof clogged and $1000s to repair it issues and many more. garuntee you that, but you will have us on VS to help you thru it and prevent many of these things from happening. i went thru many of these issues and some i hope i never will.BUT when you do research and watch videos on you tube about xc90 roll overs vs a 2000 ford explorer you will over look the money pit you have just gotten yourself into. LOL. one video that hit home was a 90mph head on collision between a xc90 and a late 80s camaro. kids were speeding in the camaro lost control and went into on coming traffic. lady in the xc90 walked away with minor injuries and all three occupants died in the camaro. the roll over ones are even better.

look at the roof just giving in on the ford...amazing

Yep, just talked to AAMCO. He said the local salvage yards won't even sell him a used one since they don't want to be liable for it. They'll only sell to the rebuilders. So my options now are:

1) Sell it as is or part it out hoping to get $1000-$1500 out of it.

2) Put another rebuilt transmission into it and sell it/trade it as a car with a rebuilt transmission with a one year warranty. Tranny is going to cost me $2300 plus tax. Could I even get $4000-$5000 for it in working order considering all the maintenance (105k mile service 2 weeks ago including timing belt and water pump) is up to date and has new tires?
